Job Summary

This position is responsible for assessing the status of important fisheries in Minnesota through the development and application of fish population, community, and stock assessment models to inform management decisions. This includes performing annual stock assessment analyses where models have been developed and developing new fish population, community, and stock assessment models. This position is also responsible for performing statistical analyses and conducting quantitative policy evaluations. The incumbent is also responsible for the planning, designing, and executing original research, especially as it relates to fish population, community, and stock assessment modeling and quantitative fisheries policy analysis. This position is responsible for dissemination of fish population, community, stock assessment model and policy analysis results to fisheries management staff and other internal and external stakeholders as needed. The incumbent will contribute to peer reviewed, scientific literature.

Primary work location is negotiable will be agreed upon at the time of hire. Work location must be within the state of Minnesota (Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, Southeast or Central region). This position has a flexible work arrangement and may be eligible to telework on a full or part-time basis which is subject to change. If approved, the employee would be required to complete a telework agreement.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

A Master’s degree in a fisheries related area with two years post-graduation experience including independent research project design, implementation and analysis; or a PhD in a fisheries related area including independent research project design, implementation and analysis.

Experience with developing and interpreting fish population, community, and stock assessment models.

A strong quantitative background and strong interest in advanced analytical methods and population dynamics.

Advanced skill in statistical analyses, including proficiency in Program R or other statistical software packages.

Advanced analytical skills to conduct research and to provide critical review of peer research.

Exceptional personal and written communication skills as well as oral presentation skills.

Conflict management skills to analyze and resolve ambiguous or controversial situations and make difficult decisions on policy/program direction.

Management skills to effectively plan, budget, motivate, coordinate, and direct resources available to meet fisheries research and management needs.

Recognized ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Experience developing stock assessment models using stock assessment modeling software (e.g., AD Model Builder, Template Model Builder, or similar software).

Experience conducting quantitative policy analyses (e.g., management strategy evaluations) to compare policy implications. Experience working on large data sets and large lake or marine fisheries.

Capability to operate and maintain a variety of equipment including outboard boat/motors, nets, electrofishing equipment, and water quality monitoring instruments.

 

Additional Requirements

This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver's License with a clear driving record.

Salary:
$28.96 - $42.67 / hourly; $60,468 - $89,094 / annually
