Deadline: Fri, 04/22/2022 - 12:00pm Employer: Great Basin Institute Job Field: Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management Wildlife Other Job Type: Seasonal, Temporary, Internship Location: Idaho Location Detail: Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve, Idaho Job Description: Great Basin Institute, in partnership with National Park Service (NPS) Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve (CRMO), is recruiting one (1) Natural Resource Technician. The Technician will work alongside NPS personnel and receive mentorship and training as they support a variety of projects related to vegetation management, wildlife management, and general resource management. Project activities will occur at all three southern Idaho NPS units (Craters of the Moon, Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument, and Minidoka National Historical Park). Interns will have the opportunity to work with park staff on resource projects for the purpose of providing the broadest range of experiences and exposure to the NPS and natural resource management. Duties and responsibilities: General Resource Management (20%) • Work in a team and with park staff to aid in all resource management activities at CRMO; o Assist other resource programs and other divisions as needed such as the cultural resources, education, and interpretation staff. o Prepare and provide information on resource activities to co-workers and the public. Vegetation Management (50%) • Work in a team and with park staff to treat invasive plants at CRMO; o Survey, identify, map exotic vegetation o Treat exotic vegetation through hand-pulling, cutting, or herbicide application o Document treatments and update files and GIS layers o Maintain equipment o If interested, will be able to study and test for the Idaho Pesticide Applicator’s License • Work in a team to monitor forest health o Survey, identify, map native vegetation o Hazard tree surveys o Tussock moth monitoring o Document and update files • Restoration o Spread native seed mixes in disturbed areas o Seed collection o Plant seedlings in disturbed areas • Other duties o Preparing information (print and/or oral) for sharing with public about invasive at CRMO Wildlife Management (30%) • Work in a team and with park staff to aid in all resource management activities at CRMO; o Assist with wildlife surveys (bat and breeding bird). o Monitor pronghorn migration through use of game cameras. o Documenting on resource findings/activities. • Other duties o Preparing information (print and/or oral) for sharing with public about wildlife at CRMO Approximately 10-15 nights will be spent camping for the position. Contract Timeline: Start Date: May 23, 2022 – September 29, 2022 (19 weeks total) AmeriCorps Term of Service: 675 hours Location: Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve is located in the high desert of southern Idaho. The scenic area, managed cooperatively by the National Park Service and the Bureau of Land Management, encompasses lava fields with many volcanic features, and sagebrush steppe grasslands. Opportunities for hiking and exploring unique geologic features, wildlife, and cultural history abound. Office work will be based at the CRMO Resource Management Office. Housing is not provided. Qualifications: Required Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree or coursework and experience in biology, ecology, or a related field; • Field experience that included adhering to field data collections protocols and accurately collecting and recording field data; • Knowledge of wildlife ecology and plant taxonomy including use of technical keys; • Ability to use a GPS unit for navigation and data collection; • Experience with ArcGIS (preferred) • Experience with invasive plant management (preferred, but not required); • Possess strong organizational skills Additional Requirements: • Ability to work productively both independently and as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals; • Ability to communicate effectively with team members, GBI and agency staff, and a diverse public; • Ability to perform physical labor for extended periods of time (e.g., digging, bending over, hauling material, hiking); • Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, work in all types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, carry upwards of 40 pounds in a backpack, and otherwise maintain good physical condition; • Valid, state-issued driver’s license; clean driving record; and ability to safely operate a 4WD truck on paved and unpaved roads, including narrow, mountain forest roads. • Ability to pass National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW) and federal criminal background checks Other Information: This AmeriCorps position is open to US Citizens, Nationals, or Permanent Residents age 17 or older. Successful applicant must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to NPS human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position.
