The Prescribed Fire Crew Manager participates in park operations, restoration, maintenance, and management. This position will report to the Division’s Ecological Burn Coordinator and work on tasks that include prescribed fire, burn unit prep, mapping fire units, marking fire lines, chainsaw and felling work, traveling extensively to various state parks and overnight stays, entering data into databases, and equipment maintenance. Duties may involve work in harsh weather conditions and rugged terrain. The position and the burn crew are based out of Lake Norman State Park but work statewide and will be required to travel frequently. Duties include the following functions: • Participates in prescribed fire, which may include burn unit prep, fire operations, managing staff and volunteers, maintenance of equipment and supplies, mop up, and monitoring. • Participates in restoration projects including thinning, planting, and other projects • Maintaining parks and buildings, which may include maintaining tools and equipment, repairing fences and gates, posting boundaries, and helping to maintain grounds and structures. • Standard work week will be Monday-Friday, 40 hours a week, but may change often and on short notice. Workweek may occasionally exceed 40 hours during fire operations. • Supervision of 11-month Prescribed Fire Crew. Responsible for keeping track of crew work hours and ensuring time is submitted weekly. Oversee daily operations of the crew. • Assist Burn Coordinator with organizing project work and burn preparation. • Will be based out of the Cliffs of the Neuse State Park in Seven Springs, N.C. • Housing is available Qualifications: REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: • Firefighter Type 2 with at least 1-2 years’ experience. • High school diploma and field experience in science-related field or related experience in land management. Prefer a bachelor’s degree in forestry, biology, ecology, natural resources management or related field, or active and ongoing study toward such a degree and/or two years related work experience or related experience in land management • Ability to operate and maintain various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues • Ability to evaluate inputs in a rapidly changing work environment and make decisions that affect firefighters and operational safety. • Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather • Ability to achieve physical fitness standard as determined by local Fire Management Officer. • A valid driver’s license. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Qualified Fire Fighter Type 1. • Experience supervising staff. • Experience operating and maintaining various types of equipment and vehicles. • High school diploma and 1 to 2 years training in science-related field or related experience in land management. Prefer a bachelor’s degree in forestry, biology, ecology, natural resources management or related field, or active and ongoing study toward such a degree and/or two years related work experience or related experience in land management. • Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems. Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required to complete preserve management activities. • Ability to operate various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g.: chainsaw, ATV, tractor and implements, leaf blower, radio, hand tools, drip torch, etc.) • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions from co-workers. • Ability to develop timeframes and then complete tasks within timeframes. • Experience and willingness to work with a wide range of people. • Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather. • Ability to navigate to remote sites with maps, written directions, and GPS. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Prescribed Fire Crew Manager coordinates day-to-day activities of the Prescribed Fire Crew and participates in wildland fire operations which include ignition, control, mop-up, suppression, monitoring, etc. The Prescribed Fire Crew Manager will participate in preparing fire lines, maintaining equipment, pre and post-burn monitoring and other tasks, and office tasks. May perform other management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire. COMPLEXITY/PROBLEM SOLVING: • May resolve fire management or personnel issues independently as delegated. • Consult with supervisor to develop plans for resolution of unusual or complex problems. • Monitor the progress of Prescribed Fire Crew Members toward achieving fire management goals. DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING: • Consults supervisor on unusual or complex issues • Make day-to-day decisions as delegated by supervisor. • May be called upon to make decisions on the fireline based upon evaluation of fire behavior and available resources RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT – FINANCIAL AND SUPERVISORY: • Receives detailed instructions to complete required tasks. • May work under close supervision or infrequent supervision. • Oversees day-to-day operations of Prescribed Fire Crew Members. Directs them in burn preparations and post-burn tasks. COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS: • Ability to convey work instructions to Prescribed Fire Crew Members. • Ability to communicate well with Burn Boss. • Ability to function productively as a member or leader of a work team. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT: The Prescribed Fire Crew Manager may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions: • Present frequent possibility of injury. • Require long hours in isolated settings. • Require physical exertion, outdoors, in all weather conditions and on difficult and sometimes hazardous terrain. • Require the ability to operate heavy machinery. • Require willingness to travel frequently.
