Job Description:

The University of Georgia’s Savannah River Ecology Laboratory is seeking applications for a Life Sciences Technician to provide professional support to studies in aquatic ecology and ecotoxicology. The position will support research of the distribution and movements of contaminants in lotic systems; bioaccumulation and trophic transfer using aquatic invertebrates and riparian spiders as model organisms; stormwater assessment and management; stream restoration, and constructed wetland effectiveness. Fieldwork will include collection of aquatic macroinvertebrates, emerging insects, riparian spiders, fish, sediment, and water samples as well as maintaining automated water samplers and data loggers. Laboratory tasks will include preparation of various collected media for chemical analyzes such as lyophilization, grinding, microwave digestion, loading samples on a direct mercury analyzer, collecting morphometric data from biota, and sediment characterization. Office tasks will include management of complex data sets, assisting with analyses, and report/manuscript writing. Individuals with experience in aquatic ecology, ecotoxicology, aquatic entomology, ichthyology/fisheries, or hydrology are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications:

We are looking for a self-motivated individual that works well with others. A B.S. with research experience or M.S. in applicable field is preferred. Meticulous laboratory skills and record keeping are needed to manage sample processing. Research experience in aquatic ecotoxicology, stream ecology, and/or experience in aquatic insect identification or a willingness to make a significant intellectual investment in learning aquatic insects and spiders are preferred.

Salary:
38,000 to 45,000 commensurate with qualifications
