Job Description:

The Forest Management Laboratory at the School of Forest Resources -

University of Maine, is seeking a graduate student (Ph.D.) interested in innovative approaches to applied forest management, landscape planning, and collaborative research with a diverse set of landowners and associated objectives. The specific project aims to integrate remote sensing products and field measurements to develop a digital toolset of high-resolution predictive mapping systems of soil conditions and site-suitability for regional tree species across Maine and the Northeast Region. Precise estimates of species-site-suitability can be used to [1] Tailor harvest prescriptions and ensure the most appropriate species are the focus of silviculture and desired future stand conditions; [2] Identify priority areas for artificial regeneration and planted forests; [3] Guide timber stand improvement activities, including density management regimes; [4] Serve as a framework to support forest habitat classification; and [5] Calibrate growth and yield models.

Qualifications:

The preferred candidate will have solid quantitative and computing skills, proficiency

in field measurements, and a demonstrated ability to conduct independent research. High levels of intellectual curiosity and self-motivation are essential. The ideal candidate will have experience with the R software environment, package development, and open-source Geographic Information Systems, or an eagerness to learn.

Salary:
$28,000-$30,000 annual stipend for 3 years

Benefits:

Stipend, full health insurance, and a tuition waiver for 19 credits per year.
