Job Description:

The Forest Stewardship Specialist provides technical forest management services and support statewide to private forest landowners and partner agency staff through a partnership with USDA State, Private, and Tribal Forestry. Work includes the sustainable management of windbreaks and other conservation tree plantings as well as native upland and riparian forests. Duties include both office and field responsibilities and require coordination, policy interpretation and individual initiative to resolve issues as they arise. This position is based in the Walhalla Field Office and requires travel and field work. The Forest Stewardship Specialist works within at the direction of the Forest Stewardship Manager to implement the North Dakota Forest Action Plan.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

-Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry from an SAF-accredited institution plus 3 months experience, or Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline plus one year of field experience.

-Valid driver's license.

-Skills that demonstrate knowledge and expertise in forestry, natural resource management, conservation, or other closely related fields.

-Basic computer skills and ability to use Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

-The ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, partners and stakeholders.

-Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with individuals, groups and through various media.

-Ability to conduct oneself professionally, be self-directed in the work environment and work flexible and extended hours.

-Willingness and ability to travel alone, stay overnight and work in semi-rural areas.

-An interest and ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and a commitment to the principles of diversity.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

- Recent work experience in forestry, soils, extension, soil conservation, or natural resource management.

- Experience using ESRI GIS products.

Work Schedule: 8am-5am M-F

The agency provides technical assistance relating to the management of private forest lands, state forest lands, urban and community forests, tree planting and wildfire protection. Salary:
$45,284 + DOE
