Job Description:

The Texas A&M Forest Service is seeking a highly motivated Forest Resource Analyst to join a talented team of professionals in the Forest Analytics Department. The Forest Resource Analyst will be part of an integrated team that works to deliver tools and information to support the agency mission of ensuring the state's trees, forests and related natural resources are protected and sustained for the benefit of all Texans. The position will: conduct an annual industry survey and publish an annual timber harvest and utilization report, analyzes Forest Inventory Analysis (FIA) tables and forest resource data. They also work with property tax division of the Texas Comptroller's office, conduct timber and biomass supply and availability studies, conducts market studies for Texas wood products industry and provides support and expertise to the Forest Economist, Geospatial Analyst and Wood Utilization Specialist.

 

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Required Education: Ph.D. in Forestry with strong analytical skills, database programming and management.

Required Experience: Three or more years of experience in Forestry or related.

Preferred Experience: Three or more years of experience in FIA analysis, growth and yield modeling or bio-metrics. Five years of experience in forest bio-metrics and forest resource analysis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Required Knowledge: Competence in MS Office, SAS/R statistical software.

Preferred Knowledge: Knowledge of forest inventory, forest mensuration and growth and yield modeling in the southern US.

Required Abilities: Work independently or as part of a team. Possess problem-solving and critical thinking abilities. Work in a collaborative team environment. Communicate work to both technical and non-technical audiences. Perform all duties with limited supervision and review from the supervisor. Multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Abilities: Think of big picture strategy while paying close attention to detail and completing routine tasks.

Required Skills: Sound judgment. Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills. Strong analytical skills. Self-motivated. Self-disciplined.

Preferred Skills: Strong statistical and modeling skills.

Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses:

Required: Valid driver’s license or ability to acquire on within 30 days of employment.

Preferred: SAF Certified Forester

 

Miscellaneous:

Responsibilities:

-Conducts an annual survey of primary wood-using industries and publishes an annual timber harvest and utilization report.

-Analyzes FIA and other forest resource data, regularly updates agency fact sheets and reports on statewide forest conditions.

-Works with Forest Economist and Silviculturist to produce data used by the property tax division of the Texas Comptroller's office.

-Conduct special economic development and market studies, including timber and biomass supply/availability for Texas wood products industries.

-Conduct rapid timber damage assessments following major storms and other natural disasters.

-Contribute to the continuing advancement of the Texas Forest Info Website (https://proxy.qualtrics.com/proxy/?url=http%3A%2F%2Ftexasforestinfo.com…) and other agency projects.

-Interact and collaborate with professionals across a broad array of forestry-related disciplines, including urban and community forestry, FIA, forest health forest management and wildland fire.

-Provide forest resource data to forest industry, other state and federal agencies and economic development interests.
