Job Description:

The Fire / Fuels Monitor performs a variety of vegetation monitoring by tracking vegetation change resulting from prescribed fire and fuels reductions projects as well as forest management projects such as planting, pre-commercial thinning and harvest activities. This position will also be responsible for monitoring and documenting weather and fire behavior parameters prior to and during prescribed fire operations such as documenting and analyzing weather data and correlating this data with observed / measured fire behavior to determine optimum weather conditions to meet prescribed fire objectives.

 

The Fire / Fuels Monitor will be responsible for collection of a wide variety of data for monitoring, fire effects observation, and participating in wildland urban interface (WUI) projects and development of databases or data storage solutions to store data for modeling and analysis including use of data management and spatial mapping software such as Microsoft Access and ESRI’s ArcPro. This position will coordinate multiple resources to achieve desired work duties including but not limited to contractors, inmate crews and crew boss, volunteers, and Tribal employees to treat slash and fuels on the reservation and fee lands. The Fire / Fuels Monitor will participate in all stages of contract work including contract development, administration, and close-out. The position will perform fire and fuels modeling including but not limited to BEHAVE, Fire and Fuels Extension to the Forest Vegetation Simulator, FLARE and FLAMMAP to model fire behavior and estimate fuel loading and produce data, summaries, and model outputs for the Fuels Management Specialist position to make fire management decisions.

Qualifications:

Practical and technical knowledge of vegetation sampling, fire monitoring methods/procedures/technologies, and skill to apply that knowledge with only general supervision in order to solve practical problems in a wide range of functions.

 

Practical knowledge of basic vegetation identification and fire ecology, including data collection techniques.

 

Knowledge of Kalispel Tribe Reservation flora and plant communities present.

 

Practical knowledge of statistics and sampling methods.

 

Knowledge of and experience utilizing GPS to locate and record field plots and field data.

 

Word processing, database management, and specialized software programs are essential to fire monitoring and modeling activities.

 

Knowledge of and experience in the use of Microsoft Access, Excel, and ESRI’s ArcMap and / or ArcPro for designing, storing, and analysis of data and creation of maps and spatial layers.

 

Ability to: write and speak clearly and effectively including the ability to synthesize research findings and formulate effective strategy for ecosystem restoration, including maintaining and increasing the presence of historically critical plant species to the Kalispel Tribe, to a variety of audiences; organize, schedule and implement plant communities and plant association research or management studies, including the ability to coordinate, lead or supervise technical or nontechnical volunteer or staff in performing variety of outdoor work tasks in inclement weather.

Miscellaneous:

The work environment for Natural Resources staff is multifaceted. Outdoor conditions make it necessary to be able to work and hike in inclement weather conditions and over variable and rugged terrain. Potential exists for interactions with wild animals, bees, and other natural hazards. Indoor work can require long periods of sedentary work interfacing with others in meetings or completing reporting or data entry at a computer station. Work may also with specific specialized equipment operations (i.e., snow machines, tractors, etc..), regional travel, and overnight stays.
