Job Description:

In cooperation with the National Park Service at Whiskeytown NRA, Great Basin Institute is recruiting an Environmental Protection Specialist to support the Division of Resource Management to ensure the protection of natural and cultural resources in the park. The primary purpose of this position is to support compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and other environmental statutes in park and resource planning, and to provide project management services in support of maintaining the environmental quality of the Park. Through early consideration of environmental issues and park resource values, this position supports the long-term management objectives of the NPS.

 

Position duties and responsibilities include:

• Assist in:

• Conducting environmental compliance reviews (e.g. Environmental Assessments, Categorical Exclusions, etc.) for park projects;

• Analyzing potential impacts of projects to natural and cultural resources;

• Working to formulate management alternatives and mitigation measures;

• Performing research and preparing documentation in alignment with NPS management guidance;

• Providing briefings on environmental issues to park staff;

• Draft an Environmental Assessment for the proposed rebuild of the Whiskeytown Environmental School campus;

• As a member of an interdisciplinary team, collect environmental data, prepare environmental reports, assist in evaluating proposals, and prepare environmental compliance documentation;

• Ensure documents are technically adequate to conform with National Environmental Policy Act and NPS regulations, policies and guidelines.

 

Most of this work is performed in an office setting with some travel to attend meetings or for field inspections.

 

 

 

Contract Timeline:

• Appointment beginning in November 2023 and ending June 2024

• 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday

 

Location:

Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is in the heart of Northern California. Opportunities are abundant in the area for recreation including boating, camping, hiking, birding, and fishing. Whiskeytown is also near the town of Redding, CA which can provide access to all large town amenities.

Whiskeytown NRA is located within the Klamath Mountain physiographic province, with proximity to the Cascade Mountains, Coast Range, and Sacramento Valley. The park's broad range in elevation, rugged topography, numerous soil types, and history of natural and human disturbance contribute to the park's diversity of both natural and cultural resources.

Whiskeytown NRA was directly impacted by the 2018 Carr Fire. This position will focus on the completion of an Environmental Assessment for the proposed rebuild of the Whiskeytown Environmental School campus. This project is one of many post-fire recovery actions in process or proposed at WHIS after the devastating Carr Fire of 2018. Compensation and Benefits:

• $25.00/hour

Qualifications:

Job Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree (minimum) in environmental science, biology, physics, geosciences, engineering, hydrology or other science-related field; those with an advanced degree are encouraged to apply;

• Experience directly related to duties and responsibilities of the position;

• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Strong writing skills preferred;

• Ability to analyze information, impacts to natural and cultural resources, and environmental impacts; ability to formulate management alternatives and develop mitigating measures;

• Ability to research, interpret and apply provisions of a broad range of environmental regulations and legislation;

• Knowledge of NPS programs and environmental compliance requirements preferred;

• Experience with GIS technologies sufficient to provide guidance and assist in collecting and assembling sensitive resource information for planning and impact assessment;

• Possess a valid, state-issued driver’s license and clean driving record;

• Ability to work independently to accomplish goals;

• Willingness and ability to consistently enact high performance standards and a strong work and team ethic in support of the mission of GBI and the goals and objectives of the NPS and this position.
