About the Job:

This Environmental Manager position exists within the Technical and Logistical Services Section, Watershed Assessment and Planning Branch, Office of Water Quality, Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM). This position provides geographic information system (GIS) and data analysis support for the branch, and occasional field duties described in IDEM's Water Quality Monitoring Strategy. The position provides services such as global positioning system (GPS) unit oversight, map review and mapping services, support for online spatial tools/applications, and database support to the nonpoint source (NPS) and branch wide programs. The person in this position must be familiar with the use of GPS and GIS services including ArcGIS and ESRI products. The person in this position completes internal and external data requests and acts as a liaison for GIS services for the branch. The position conducts statistical analysis of environmental monitoring data collected by the branch and provides support for ongoing initiatives.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

• Conduct spatial analyses and develop maps for reports across all program areas for the branch. Maintain the NPS program GIS layers and update GIS layers for multiple program areas.

• Provide maintenance and oversight of global positioning system (GPS) units and ArcGIS online accounts used in collection of environmental field data. Provide training and assistance to staff on units as necessary and assist with preparation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

• Conduct or assist with statistical and spatial analyses of environmental data as requested to meet ongoing needs of the branch.

• Assist with maintenance of the NPS program database and others as needed.

• Perform internal and external data requests as it pertains to program area geospatial information.

• Develop and maintain tools to assist in watershed planning, such as internet tools, story maps and/or web applications, and GIS/GPS applications and assist staff and external customers in learning the use of these tools, when needed.

• Act as a liaison for GIS and database support and coordinate as necessary with Information Services (IS) and Indiana Office of Technology (IOT) groups.

• Participate in the Indiana Geographic Information Council (IGIC) Waters Workgroup and report relevant information to management.

• Assist in the collection of environmental field data including water chemistry, fish tissue, and fish and macroinvertebrate communities as requested.

Qualifications:

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Geography, Biology, Statistics, Natural Resources, or a related field.

• 1-3 years of experience in environmental or natural resources science, geography, biology, or statistical analysis. An M.S. degree in any of these fields of study with emphasis on spatial and statistical analysis may substitute for experience.

• Knowledge or experience with GPS, GIS, ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online platforms.

• Broad knowledge of theories, environmental protection principles, and practices as they pertain to water quality.

• Ability to effectively interact and orally communicate with parties with diverse levels of environmental and geospatial expertise.

• Ability to conduct spatial and statistical analysis for environmental data. Experience using statistical software such as R is highly desirable.

• Ability to use and maintain Global Positioning System (GPS) used for collection of field data, and transfer the data to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for analysis.

• Ability to work both independently and in a team to complete tasks across multiple program areas.

• Knowledge or experience in managing databases. Experience using Microsoft Access is preferred.
