Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service – National Wildlife Refuge System Southeast Inventory & Monitoring Branch is seeking 1 Inventory & Monitoring Conservation Planner to help with a diverse array of wildlife and habitat inventory & monitoring responsibilities.

The Regional Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) Branch addresses the National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS) critical information needs to evaluate the effectiveness of conservation strategies on national wildlife refuges across the Southeast. The I&M Branch provides technical support to support national wildlife refuges of the southeast in survey planning and design, and data collection, management, and analysis to support management decisions for National Wildlife Refuges. Employees work within the states of NC, SC, GA, FL, AL, TN, KY, AR, LA, MS, and U.S. Territories in the Caribbean to provide technical support to the 130 national wildlife refuges within this area.

 

Start Date: April 18, 2022 (Some flexibility in start date possible)

End Date: April 14, 2023 (or 52 weeks after start date)

 

Location: Remote. The Conservation Planner will work from their own home/space. Applicants local to the Southeast Region (NC, SC, GA, FL, AL, TN, KY, AR, LA, MS) will be given preference, as occasional travel to the Regional office in Atlanta, GA or other offices may be required.

 

 

Work Schedule: Duties will primarily be carried out Monday - Friday. Bi-weekly totals should not exceed 80 hours. A flexible work schedule may be required, which could involve work performed outside of normal work hours including on weekends and/or holidays. Time off may be granted and requests should be directed to ACE and the FWS for approval.

 

 

Living Allowance: The ACE Fellow will contribute ~40 hours/week and receive a living allowance of $600/week paid out biweekly for food, housing, and incidental living expenses.

 

Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member.

 

Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-competitive Hiring Authority: Members serving on this project may be eligible to receive a Department of the Interior (DOI) PLC non-competitive hiring authority certificate upon completion of their term of service. Eligible members must meet standard requirements of completing at least 640 hours (16 weeks at 40 hours/week) and utilize their certificate when applying for qualifying federal positions within 2 years of receipt. Position Description:

 

Conservation Planner duties for the Inventory & Monitoring Branch are anticipated to include:

-Assisting full-time Inventory & Monitoring Branch staff, serving primarily in a support capacity

-Completing assigned tasks related to information and data collection, acquisition, entry, organization and management

-Assists in organizing and facilitating meetings or workshops (in-person and remote)

processing of information into draft reports, tables, charts, maps and other natural resource related science and planning products including but not limited to species literature reviews, draft S.M.A.R.T Management Goals & Objectives and Inventory & Monitoring Survey Narratives

-Completions of ‘tidy’ data tasks (entry, organization and translation between systems) in .xls, AGOL and Sharepoint

-Coordinating with various FWS technical specialists, support personnel, and refuge staff to ensure that all procedures and products are satisfactorily addressed

Required:

-The fellow must be willing to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.

-U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident

-Holding a 4-year degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, or disciplines related to the position.

-Ability to undergo a federal criminal background check

-A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are required (documentation to be provided upon request)

-Ability to work within a specialized team setting

-Ability to effectively communicate both written and verbal

-Proficient in English

-Ability to work in an office setting and at a computer for extended periods

-Basic skills in scientific writing, data entry and management, and self-sufficiency and safety in a field setting.

-Ability to keep work organized and communicate orally to determine needs and follow procedures

-Ability to manage, organize, and clean data using programs including MS Word, Excel, ArcGIS, ArcPro, R

-Ability to manage spatial data using ArcGIS, ArcPro, and AGOL.

-Ability to conduct statistical analysis and write code using R software.

 

Preferred:

-Lives within the Southeast region of the United States

-Experience and/or knowledge in the mission of the USFWS and other federal land management agencies

-Knowledge of natural sciences and a strong professional interest in wildlife and habitat management.

-Ability to learn and contribute to regional tools (e.g., ServCat)
