WWF’s internship program vision is to recruit professionals early in their careers who bring fresh thinking and innovation to the environmental and conservation sector and are well positioned to develop into the next generation of leaders. Our mission is to increase exposure of students from underrepresented populations to conservation and environmental careers, provide professional development opportunities, reduce the barriers to attracting a diverse pool of internship candidates, and develop a pipeline for future WWF hires from underrepresented populations.

Position Summary

WWF seeks an intern to support the understanding of forest degradation, definition, and methods. Forest degradation is a complex and multi-dimensional process broadly defined as a negative trend in forest conditions associated with direct and indirect human-induced processes that result in a long-term reduction or loss of biological productivity, ecological integrity, and decline of economic values. Forest degradation is a multi-dimensional process that has proven difficult to measure since it relates to a progressive decline in the structure, composition, and functions of a forest. Several frameworks have been proposed to determine forest degradation, as well as methods. However, there is an increasing trend to use spatially explicit approaches to assess forest degradation, yet these methods may face limitations to comprise all dimensions of degradation. Current understanding tends to agree that the rates and extent of natural forests’ degradation may even exceed those of deforestation. This internship will contribute to understanding the different definitions and methods used to understand forest degradation.

Responsibilities

Internship Description

  • Conduct a comprehensive literature review on the definitions, methods and analysis used to assess forest degradation including academic papers, key grey literature, and others including the forest reference emission levels from countries submitted to the UNFCCC
  • Analyze the potential and limitations of the different approaches identified to assess forest degradation, along with their implications across the different forest biomes
  • Develop a brief report with findings from the literature review, and share main gained insights with colleagues at the WWF Forest Practice

Learning Outcomes

WWF interns will be provided a set of professional development opportunities, aimed at increasing their exposure to conservation and sustainability careers. This includes:

  • Gain deep understanding on a key relevant topic as forest degradation;
  • Opportunity to interact with members of WWF Global Science Team;
  • Opportunities to interact with colleagues in WWF network;
  • Up to two online courses through Cornell University’s eCornell program;
  • Speed mentoring sessions;
  • Opportunity to present their work to intern peers and WWF staff;
  • Session on resume and interviewing best practices.

Interns will also have access to an array of networking opportunities. This includes meetings with WWF’s CEO, the senior management team, Employee Resource Groups, and representatives from other departments.

Minimum Requirements

  • Previous experience in conducting literature reviews
  • Pursuing a graduate program in Forestry, Environmental Studies, Ecology. Those studying outside these areas are still highly encouraged to apply.
  • Experience in geospatial analysis, data science, information science
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Organized and self-motivated
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Familiarity with literature reviews and skills in synthesizing data
  • Understanding of forest dynamics and drivers of forest degradation
  • Experience in statistical, geospatial analysis, data science
