Job Description:

Little St. Simons Island (LSSI) is seeking a seasonal Bird Technician to assist with breeding beach-nesting bird monitoring and management. The applicant will be responsible to find, document, and track all American oystercatcher, black skimmer, and least tern nests and broods. S/He will conduct Wilson’s plover nesting surveys, shorebird migration surveys, and will successfully re-sight banded birds. The Bird Technician will also assist the Ecological Coordinator with predator management. Daily monitoring activities include a strenuous bicycle ride (up to 18 miles/day) with field equipment to and along the beach. Field work is often conducted in harsh conditions that may include heat, biting insects, wind, rain, and soft sand. The Bird Technician will also participate in other management projects that will include sea turtle nest monitoring, marsh bird point count surveys, and waterbird rookery surveys. There is also an educational component to the position that includes a weekly shorebird presentation as part of the Little St. Simons Island guest program.

 

The successful applicant will have a flexible schedule, working 40 hours per week with one full day off per week. Little St. Simons Island, Georgia, is an 11,000-acre private barrier island that is only accessible by boat. Access to the mainland is limited and is not guaranteed on the technician’s time off. This is a full-time, seasonal position that runs March 27-July 14 (flexible).

Qualifications:

• A bachelor’s degree in biology, zoology, ecology, or related field.

• Previous field experience and the ability to identify shorebird and seabird species is a must.

• The candidate must be in excellent physical condition and able to tolerate biting insects.

• S/He must be a self-starter and be able to work both independently and as a team. Candidates should be enthusiastic, positive, and be able to communicate effectively.

 

 

Salary:
$8.50/hr plus housing and meals
