Job Description:

The Department of Applied Ecology invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in freshwater fish ecology. We seek candidates who conduct innovative, quantitative research that develops and applies ecological principles to address issues related to freshwater fish conservation and management.

 

The successful applicant will:

 

  1. Build on departmental strengths in aquatic ecology, marine and freshwater fish ecology, organismal ecology, conservation, and management to develop a robust, externally funded research program.
  2. Have the opportunity to develop collaborations with outside cooperators (e.g., the USGS North Carolina Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, the Center for Applied Aquatic Ecology, the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences Aquatic Plant Management Program, the Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Biology Program, the USGS Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center, NC Museum of Natural Sciences, NC Wildlife Resources Commission).
  3. Teaching responsibilities include an undergraduate course at the intersection of fish ecology and human dimensions (e.g. Fisheries Science/Management), a graduate course in the candidate’s area of expertise, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
  4. Conduct extension activities related to outreach and engagement of fisheries and conservation (e.g. pond management) in North Carolina and related areas.
  5. Support the University’s mission, vision, and values through their research, teaching, and service activities.

Qualifications:
  • A Ph.D. in Ecology or a relevant field.
  • Ability to work with state, federal, or other management agencies.
  • Evidence of teaching and mentoring experience.
  • Ability to communicate science to all audiences.
  • Evidence of acquiring research funding.
  • Peer-reviewed publications in freshwater fish ecology.
  • Commitment to strengthening work environments that are accepting and foster belonging within the Department.
  • Individuals with post-doctoral or related experiences.
  • Evidence of: teaching and mentoring; communicating science to various audiences; acquiring research funding; working with state, federal, or other management agencies.
  • Experience teaching fisheries science or other fish ecology or management courses.
