The Wildlife Tech 1 assists with the implementation of habitat restoration programs on state lands to benefit rare species and natural communities. Job responsibilities include conducting prescribed burns, providing assistance monitoring and managing red-cockaded woodpeckers on state and private lands, controlling invasive species, collecting and planting native grass seed, assisting with research to include collecting biological data, assisting with timber management operations, constructing nest boxes for red-cockaded woodpeckers and other species, creating wooden signage for wildlife management areas, operating farm tractors and all-terrain vehicles in support of habitat and wildlife management and maintaining forestry tools and heavy equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or GED AND One year (2 semesters) of Biology.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Preference may be given to applicants with: Completion of 2-year degree or higher in wildlife management or related field Familiarity with management of rare species and natural communities Certified or certifiable in cavity installation, RCW nestling extraction and banding and capturing adults for banding and translocation Experience in prescribed fire management, with the ability to attain FFT2 Wildland Firefighter training with current NWCG qualifications including pack test Experience with invasive species identification and control, particularly herbicide application Experience with operation of chainsaws and the ability to complete S212 chainsaw training Experience with heavy equipment: e.g., flail vac, no till drill, mulcher head, skidder, and tractors Experience with GIS mapping programs and GPS-enabled mapping techniques Experience with welding, fabrication, and repairing and maintaining field equipment
