Dean Dale Greene wins international forest engineering award

Dean Dale Greene (right) accepts the 2017 International Forest Engineering Achievement Award from Dr. Chad Bolding, chair of the Council on Forest Engineering awards committee.

Athens, Ga. — Dale Greene, dean of the University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, was honored with an international award recently for his years of work in forest operations.

Greene received the International Forest Engineering Achievement Award, which recognizes “significant achievements in forest engineering by individuals for outstanding service and sustained contributions to the profession through education, extension, research, development or administration.”

Greene was presented the award, bestowed by the Council on Forest Engineering, at the organization’s annual meeting in August in Bangor, Maine.

“Many of the previous recipients of this award were mentors to me in graduate school or early in my career so that makes receiving this award even more meaningful to me,” Greene said.

Before becoming dean in 2015, Greene spent his career teaching forestry at the Warnell School, joining the faculty in 1986. He also served as interim associate dean for academic affairs before taking the top position in the school.

Over his 31-year career with Warnell, Greene has been honored numerous times, including receiving all three teaching awards given by the school. He’s also been honored by the Georgia Forestry Association with its Wise Owl Award and was inducted into the Georgia Foresters Hall of Fame in 2007.

Greene has not only developed some of the most popular courses at Warnell — including the forestry field camp class that gives undergraduates hands-on experience in the industry — but he has also been a prolific researcher, authoring dozens of peer-reviewed articles on forestry issues, including methods to improve timber harvesting to reduce environmental impact, increase profit and produce high-quality wood products.

The Council on Forest Engineering is an international professional organization that focuses on developing forest engineering techniques and promoting the best methods of managing and operating forests.
