Contact Quint Newcomer
My current research interests involve studying the Broad River Watershed in northeast Georgia using an integrative, socioecological approach. My primary role for eleven years at the University of Georgia was serving as director of UGA Costa Rica, supervising the development and administration of education abroad programming for UGA Costa Rica as well as the overall campus operations and programming in Costa Rica. My primary goal as director of UGA Costa Rica was to facilitate an integrative learning environment for faculty and students to help advance a holistic understanding of challenges and opportunities related to sustainability. Through the UGA Center for Integrative Conservation Research I participated as PI and Co-PI in several large-team research proposals to develop an integrative graduate-level research program at UGA Costa Rica. I established and helped supervise the UGA Costa Rica Carbon Offset Reforestation Program and supervised the research, writing, and publication of five UGA Costa Rica Sustainability Reports. My teaching at UGA has focused on introductory-level ecology and culture related to Costa Rica, including teaching a field-based course in Costa Rica about ecology and sustainability for a group of visiting undergraduate students from Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan. With colleagues at Auburn University I co-taught a biennial graduate course on ecosystem services which involved field research in Costa Rica. I have developed and supervised over 30 student internships, have supervised five undergraduate CURO Research projects, and have served on 11 masters and PhD committees. At UGA, I have also participated as a member of the Latino Advisory Board and as Core Faculty in the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute.
