JOB SUMMARY

This position within Environmental Affairs will lead company efforts on environmental stewardship through a strategic approach consistent with Southern Company’s commitment of being a national leader in conservation. The position will also serve as an expert in natural resources policy, permitting, mitigation, and landscape and wildlife conservation in support of our subsidiaries. The Environmental Specialist/Engineer will support Southern Company’s subsidiaries relative to federal and state natural resources regulations, including protected species, wetlands, and cultural resources. The position will represent the Company in industry trade groups, present at conferences and forums, and engage employees across numerous functional areas at all Company subsidiaries.

 
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead the Company’s natural resources and stewardship engagement efforts by collaborating with Company subsidiaries and key stakeholders (i.e. eNGO, regulatory agencies, and private landowners)
  • Continue to grow the Company’s position as a nationally recognized conservation leader 
  • Manage requests from subsidiaries and provide system-wide strategies and analysis relative to natural resources policies, legislation, litigation and regulations
  • Share expertise and showcase the Company’s leadership through presentations and briefings
Qualifications:
JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education 

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Preferred disciplines: Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, or Engineering
  • Postgraduate degree in these fields of study highly desired
Experience
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, confidence in representing an organization externally  
  • Understanding of environmental regulatory and legislative development processes at the federal and state levels, specifically as it relates to endangered species, wetlands, and NEPA
  • Sound decision making skills, critical and strategic thinking, and ability to identify issues ahead of time to manage and communicate business threats and opportunities
  • Ability to develop, build, and maintain strong internal and external relationships 
  • Demonstrate strong initiative and ability to build consensus
  • Ability to work in a team environment with diverse disciplines and backgrounds

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
  • This position will require some travel – approximately 25% per year
