Job Description:

The Society of Municipal Arborists (SMA), in conjunction with the USDA Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program, the Alliance for Community Trees, the Arbor Day Foundation, the Society of American Foresters, and the Utility Arborist Association, is launching the seventh year of a Municipal Forestry Intern Program (SMA Intern).

The SMA is offering 2 categories of internships. Option 1 is a 10 Week Summer internship where students will experience the full range of job duties of the municipal aborist/urban forester. Option 2 is a Project Based Internship. Students will work on a specific project, to be determined by the host city. Examples may include, but are not limited to, tree inventories, tree planting, PR/marketing campaigns, i-Tree analyses, research, graphic design, planting design, website management or other approved projects. The length of the internship will be determined by the time required to complete the project and may occur at a time agreeable to both student and host city.

The purpose of the internship positions are to 1) Provide hands-on experience alongside practicing professionals who will serve as mentors in the municipal, utility, and non-profit sectors over the internship period, helping students to identify and develop the skills needed to be successful professionals in urban forestry and 2) Provide students, who are majoring in a course of study other than natural resources, the opportunity to connect with this career and strengthen their skill set in a meaningful way.

Who is Eligible?

Undergraduate and Graduate students in Urban Forestry and Natural Resources, or current students in other fields of study who are interested in gaining meaningful experience in local government.

There are different deadlines for the 2 options available for internship positions. Option 1 (Summer Internship): Thursday March 1, 2017 (5:00 pm EST). Option 2 (Project Internships): Feb 1, 2017 5:00 pm (EST), Apr 1, 2017 5:00 pm (EST), Jun 1, 2017 5:00 pm (EST), and Aug 1, 2017 5:00 pm (EST).

Salary:
$15/hour
Benefits:

Selected interns will receive a $1,200 housing stipend along with free registration and a $300 Travel Scholarship to attend the Fall 2017 SMA Annual Conference.
