The Savannah River Ecology Lab is looking to hire one temporary research technician from January 2020 – May 2020 to assist with field research being conducted at the Savannah River Site, Aiken, SC. The technician will primarily work on a USDA funded project aimed at quantifying the ecological factors affecting the success of rabies elimination programs in the Southeastern US. As part of this study the technician will work in close collaboration with other students, postdocs, faculty and agency personnel to: (a) trap and handle mesopredators (raccoons and opossums), and collect biological samples (e.g., blood and tissue) from trapped individuals; (b) deploy GPS collars on the mesopredators (c) quantify the levels of rabies vaccine bait uptake by mesopredators using placebo baits incorporating the biomarker Rhodamine-B. Other duties include data entry/organization and general lab work while at the Savannah River Ecology Lab. Employment is expected run from January through May, 2020.
Minimum qualifications for this position include a B.S. degree in wildlife ecology, ecology, or a related discipline, and a valid U.S. driver’s license. We are looking for a self-motivated, responsible, and enthusiastic individual who is eager to learn new skills. Technician will need to be organized, reliable, and comfortable working alone. Must be able to work in all weather conditions including hot, humid, and rainy weather. Must be able to tolerate biting and stinging insects (e.g., wasps, spiders, and ants) and moderate hiking up to 6+ miles a day over uneven terrain carrying a heavy pack and/or traps for multiple days at a time. While prior experience in trapping and handling wildlife, specifically mesopredators, is a plus, it is not required. Previous rabies vaccination with an active rabies antibody titre is highly desirable. However, for qualified candidates that have not had a rabies vaccine we will bear the cost of the rabies vaccine. SREL is located on the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site in Aiken, South Carolina. A security clearance will be required. Applicants must be able to pass a background investigation.
