The School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR) at The Ohio State University (OSU) is seeking applicants for one National Science Foundation (NSF) funded M.S. assistantship available beginning August 23, 2022. The successful applicant will be working with Dr. Roger Williams on research focused on wildland fire behavior in eastern hardwood forests, with study locations located in southern/southeastern Ohio, and will actively participate in the conducting of prescribed fires. The successful applicant will also be collaborating with researchers from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at OSU in the use of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) to monitor and evaluate active fires.
This position requires an individual who is: 1) self-motivated and can work independently and collaboratively; 2) has a strong desire and passion to learn about wildland fire behavior and associated factors influencing behavior including wildland fuels, topography, weather, etc.; 3) has attained [or will attain by May, 2022] a bachelor’s degree in forestry,ecology, environmental science, natural resource management, or a related field from an accredited university; 4) meets all admissions requirements to the Master of Science program in SENR (https://senr.osu.edu/graduate/admissions); and 5) has demonstrated proficiency communicating in English. Having the Incident Qualification Card (Red Card) certification is preferred. If Red Card certification has not been attained by the successful applicant at the start of the assistantship, then Red Card certification training is available at SENR and will be required at the start of the assistantship.
