The Forester will assist in the Forest Management Program on Lake George State Forest land. The management objective is to provide sustained yield of multiple forest products. Sound silvicultural practices are coordinated with wildlife, recreation and water management. The Forester is responsible for the installation of plots for monitoring of timber sales and regular inspections of the cutting operations. The Forester is essential to the management of the Lake George State Forest due to the large number of timber sales in progress per year.
Assists in planning, implementation and supervision of marking, selling and administration of all timber sales on Lake George State Forest.
Responsible for making regular inspections of all timber sales in progress on Lake George State Forest and seeing that the conditions of the timber sale agreements are not violated such as the cutting of unmarked trees, leaving an area littered and unnecessary damage to unmarked trees.
Provides wildfire and emergency response support as directed. Assists in the development of smoke management, wildfire prevention, prescribed fire, pre-suppression burning plans and hazardous fuels mitigation. Assists in the enforcement of Florida’s open burning laws and regulations.
Assists in planning, implementation and supervision of the prescribed buring program on Lake George State Forest.
Assists in planning, implementation and supervision of stand description of various timber stand conditions for the purpose of describing present stand conditions and prescribing recommendations for silvicultural and other treatments. Responsible for the detection and control of insect and disease attacks on the state forest.
Assists in the planning, implementation and supervision of reforestation of the Lake George State Forest, either hand planting, machine planting or natural regeneration. Regarding natural reforestation, the Forester is responsible for checking survival on an annual basis. Regarding artificial reforestation, the Forester is responsible for making regular checks on planting crews to insure the use of proper techniques and once planting has been completed, the Forester is responsible for making seedling survival checks.
Assists in the training of timber markers in Forest Management technology and in the use of instruments and equipment as they apply to Lake George State Forest management objectives.
Conveys information and conducts education programs to the public though news releases, tours, buyer contracts and by maintaining good public relations with people living within and outside the Lake George State Forest.
Responsible for maintaining assigned equipment such as vehicles, technical forestry equipment, etc.
Performs other related work as assigned, which may include the handling of revenue.
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major course of study in forestry or related field. Course work must include the following four (4) courses: Silviculture, Dendrology, Forest Mensuration and Forest Management; or
Receipt of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major course of study in forestry or related field within six (6) months of the closing date of this advertisement.
