Background:

Weyerhaeuser Company owns and manages approximately 13 million acres of commercial timberlands in the U.S., with a southern ownership that extends from the east coast of North Carolina and Georgia to eastern Oklahoma. Weyerhaeuser Company is committed to sustainable forest management, including water quality, and all ownership is certified under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI).

Weyerhaeuser Company is seeking a forest hydrologist to join a scientifically rigorous research and technical support program focused on developing an improved understanding of water resources on commercial forest lands of the southeastern United States. The successful applicant must have experience in maintaining instrumentation and collecting data from hydrological studies of forested watersheds, be able to assist with data analyses, and provide technical support to forestry operations on water-related issues.

Key Functions

  • Participate in an established environmental research program in managed forest landscapes

  • Assist with managing a complex, watershed scale, long-term research project, including data collection and management and equipment maintenance

  • Provide technical support to forest managers, particularly on water-related issues

  • Contribute to meeting Company-wide sustainability goals

  • Develop effective external liaisons with universities, conservation organizations, and government agencies

  • Serve as a focal point for technical environmental communications

  • Provide support as needed to production forestry and tree improvement research platforms.

Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in forestry, forest hydrology, aquatic ecology, or related field.

  • A clear indication of experience with hydrologic sampling equipment, data management, and research skills, particularly relative to aquatic systems.

  • Strong preference for candidates with aquatic ecology skills/background

  • Strong preference for spatial/GIS skills

  • Strong desire and ability to work in both a research capacity and a technical support/technical transfer role, including translating research results in practical applications within working forests.

  • Experience working with both private and public entities preferred.

  • Other preferred skills include demonstrated ability to work in teams across disciplines and work alone in the field; strong communication skills; familiarity with southeastern pine silviculture
