Job Description:

Work with the Director of Environmental Education, NGRREC scientists and education team to plan, develop, deliver, and evaluate National Great Rivers Research and Education Center (NGRREC) educational programs relating to: aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems; river and floodplain ecology and management; watershed ecology and management; population and community ecology of riverine and floodplain biota; outdoor recreation and eco-tourism opportunities; economics of river communities and river resources; and public attitudes or social issues related to the management of large rivers and their watersheds. Programs are directed toward all age groups. Assist with other NGRREC and L&C programs as determined by the Director of Environmental Education.

Key Measurable Expectations:

  • Plan, develop and implement program activities such as summer camps, educator workshops, and stewardship activities, primarily associated with the Swarovski Waterschool USA Mississippi River
  • Assess the materials needed to conduct programming and assist with purchasing, caring for, and maintaining inventory of those materials
  • Identify and execute specific strategies to reach target groups including, but not limited to schools, the general public, home and landowners, retailers, businesses, and tourism entities
  • Collaborate with a variety of organizations to expand and implement programs
  • Maintain regular contact and positive relationships with external groups involved in programming
  • Develop informational and promotional materials such as newsletters, brochures, etc., regarding environmental issues and program activities
  • Assist with maintenance of NGRREC website pages related to programming areas 
  • Complete quarterly and annual reports based on program needs
  • Represent NGRREC at conferences and events related to programming areas
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with grant partners
  • Cultivate and solicit sponsors to fund educational programming and events
  • Assist Director of Environmental Education in the development of grant and funding proposals, budgets, and work plans
  • Collaborate with the environmental education team to identify specific strategies to reach target groups such as underserved communities, at-risk populations, and the general public
  • Plan and deliver NGRREC environmental education programs to multiple audiences and stakeholders
  • Network, form partnerships, and/or collaborate with the local community, regional, state, and national organizations, groups, and cultural institutions to assess environmental education needs and develop programs to address those needs
  • Work with school districts and teachers to integrate environmental issues and materials into their existing activities and curricula
  • Work with scientists and researchers to develop scientifically-based and relevant education programming
  • Assist with a variety of programs coordinated and delivered by NGRREC such as: 
  • Project WET: Water Education Today,
  • Swarovski Waterschool USA Mississippi River Program 
  • Mississippi River Exchange (MRX) program
  • Stream Discovery Program 
  • Maintain a library of resource materials
  • Assist in the development and execution of a strategic plan for the program



Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA or BS in biology, education, environmental science or other related field required. MS preferred
  • Minimum of one-year of experience in community-based outreach, education, and teaching in formal and/or non-formal environments
  • Highly motivated, creative, organized, experienced individual who wants to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Experience educating a broad range of ages
  • Excellent writing, presentation, and public relations skills
  • Proven grant writing and fundraising experience
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Independent judgment in development, implementation and evaluation of programs and plans
  • Frequent travel to various greater St. Louis area locations and throughout the state, including the transport of materials and equipment
  • Willing to work weekends and evenings as needed
  • Familiarity with national and state K-12 educational standards including Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
  • Familiarity with scientific concepts related to water and watersheds
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and willingness to learn new computer applications 

Work Hours: Some Evenings , Some Weekends , Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
