The Department of Renewable Resources, in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences, University of Alberta, Canada, invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant/Associate Professor in Ecosystem-based Management. The industry funding required for this position has already been confirmed and industrial partners within the forestry sector are committed to working with the successful candidate in the development of the research program for an Industrial Research Chair.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. and substantial post-doctoral experience in applied ecosystem-based forest management (EBM), or in related fields such as forest ecology, landscape ecology, or conservation biology but with a specific focus on relevance to forest management. We seek candidates with a well-established record of applied research in EBM aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability of a diversity of forest values while supporting a healthy forest industry. In particular, we seek an individual interested in conducting research relevant to forest types common to Alberta and focusing on: (a) linking finer- (stand-) scale and coarser- (landscape-) scale approaches to implementation of EBM; (b) field-based studies documenting response to and recovery following EBM practices. The candidate should be broad-thinking and have a demonstrated interest in how forest ecosystems are affected by natural and anthropogenic disturbances and how this knowledge can be applied to the sustainable management of forest resource ecosystems and landscapes. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a program of independent research and graduate student education, including a balanced portfolio of ‘pure’ and ‘applied’ research. The successful candidate will be expected to provide scientific leadership for and to take advantage of the long term EMEND experiment http://www.emendproject.org/ and its legacy of data. The successful candidate's research will complement existing strengths of the Department in conservation biology, forest ecology, forestry, reclamation, and soils. It is expected that the successful candidate will proactively develop collaborative relations with colleagues in the department, other units at UofA, and at other institutions/organizations (e.g., fRIResearch Healthy Landscapes program, Canadian Forest Service). Applicants must be willing and able to interact with industrial and government (federal, provincial) professionals in the development, transfer and application of research that supports the goals for ecological, economic and social sustainability of forests. The successful applicant will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and actively contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching, particularly in ecosystem management and forest ecology. Applicants who are Registered Professional Foresters or who have the credentials to obtain that designation in Alberta will be favourably considered. The Faculty emphasizes excellence in teaching; therefore evidence of novel approaches and interest in non-traditional teaching methods is expected. Teaching responsibilities may include courses in forest management, biodiversity, ecology and related forestry and conservation biology courses – but teaching loads are reduced during the time of an Industrial Chair. Effective supervision of graduate students and participation on graduate student committees is also required.
