Alabama A&M University’s Forestry, Ecology, and Wildlife Program invites applications, especially from women and underrepresented groups, for the position of Assistant Professor of Forest Health and Fire Protection.
This is a nine-month, tenure track, academic appointment with additional three-month summer employment expected; the latter supported from research grant funding. Initial summer funding will be available. We seek a candidate who is committed to diversity and inclusion, hands-on field-based teaching, and developing a nationally recognized extramurally-funded research program that involves students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Responsibilities will include: teaching undergraduate courses such as Forest Fire Ecology, Forest Pests and Protection, Dendrology, and Natural Resources Management, as well as graduate courses in the candidate’s area of expertise (50%), and conducting scholarly research in forest fire ecology, management, and health (50%). Service to the department, university, and community by serving on committees, advising undergraduate students, participating in recruitment activities and stakeholder outreach is expected. The successful candidate will also supervise and mentor undergraduate, master and doctoral level students and serve on graduate student committees.
Required: Ph.D. in forestry or a closely related discipline, with an emphasis in fire ecology and/or forest health, protection, or management and possess, or be able to obtain, a valid Alabama driver’s license.
Preferred: 1) excellence in teaching with demonstrated experience in field-based and hands-on instruction, 2) demonstrated ability to develop a superior research program that advances knowledge of forest prescribed forest fire or forest health and resilience, as evidenced by a strong record of scientific excellence such as publications in peer-reviewed journals, 3) previous history of success in securing and sustaining external competitive research funding, 4) strong commitment to promoting student diversity and inclusion, 5) ability to collaborate with other faculty in interdisciplinary projects, 6) a record or potential to successfully engage in outreach to landowners, managers, and other stakeholders and 7) certification as prescribed burn manager.
Alabama A&M University is the first and only Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to receive professional accreditation from the SAF for its bachelor’s degree in Forestry. Our program’s graduates have high job placement rates (over 90%) in their field of study, primarily with the USDA Forest Service. Our program has strong links with the USDA Southern Research Station and has been a USDA Center of Excellence in Forestry for more than two decades. The program has received over $11 million in external funding in the last 15 years. In addition to teaching, faculty members are part of an active research program and train graduate students at the master’s and doctoral levels in a variety of natural resources disciplines. Collaboration with colleagues and external partners allows faculty members to fulfill the University’s land-grant mission to train students, conduct research, and engage the community. The Forestry, Ecology, and Wildlife Program is interdisciplinary and has a strong applied component.
