Data Mining - The loblolly pine gene discovery project

This is a screenshot of the custom written Java GUI interface that we use to perform datamining of the gene expression data collected from our loblolly pine gene discovery project. In the background is a histogram in which each vertical bar represents a unique gene product (15,477 at the time this data was examined) and each color represents a sample of tissue exposed to different conditions of physical, chemical or nutritional stress. The size of each colored zone is proportional to the number of times that particular gene product was detected in a treated tissue. In the foreground is a window obtained by clicking on a single histogram bar with the mouse. In this case, gene 2_1, which happens to be an S-adenosylmethionine synthetase (an important enzyme in wood formation), was detected in many of the samples, but was most abundant in control root tissues.
