All duties/tasks are subject to change based on the interest, knowledge, and experience of the Intern, as well as the needs of Beech Hollow Wildflower Farm. In Fall, the Intern will get hands-on experience harvesting and preparing a few dozen species of native plant seeds for sowing, storage, or stratification. In late Fall, there is an introduction to division techniques, hardwood cuttings, and live stakes, per proper timing and species appropriateness. Nursery/Grounds Interns assist with native specimen gardens maintenance, nursery organization and appearance, weeding, pruning, fertilization, IPM, irrigation, seed collection/cleaning, media mixing, up-potting, hardening off, divisions and cuttings, winterizing & de-winterizing the nursery/beds, and greenhouse operations including including sowing, transplanting, facility maintenance, and seed treatment. Qualifications: Interest in Sustainable Ag production, Horticulture (must have experience with or be willing to learn organic practice), Ecology, native plants, native pollinator habitats, nursery management, greenhouse propagation, and/or related fields. - Ability to work with garden hand tools (shovel, hoe, rake, etc.) - Knowledge of or ability to learn basic safety protocols for hand tools, power tools, farm equipment. - Must be physically proficient to complete tasks effectively: - Must be able to work outside in the elements (or in a non-heated greenhouse) - Must be able to stand and/or kneel for extended periods. - Must be able to lift 50 pounds. - Must have own transportation and valid GA driver’s license. - Must have proof of US Citizenship or legal residency. This is a part-time position – 8-24 hours per week Miscellaneous: Intern will learn more about native plants and their propagation. Starting hours are 10 – 15 hours per week, taking into account each Intern’s academic schedule and availability. This entails two or three days a week with a half hour paid lunch each day. The starting wage is $14.00. The duration of the Internship begins August 1st and runs until the end of the academic year, July 30th. This is in accordance with the UGA MOU for credit. Uncredited, paid internships are also available. These are scheduled based on the semester calendar. Hours are organized according to student availability during each semester. Team-oriented attitude: able to work solo and cooperatively with others as part of a working farm crew.
