Full StoryTwo University of Georgia doctoral students are participating in the second round of the SciFund Challenge, an experiment in crowd funding for scientific research. Alyssa Gehman, in the Odum School of Ecology, and Sean Sterrett, in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, are raising money from individuals to fund their research.

Full StorySean Sterrett is a PhD student at the Warnell School who is interested in studying why conserving freshwater turtle populations is important from an ecological perspective. He is launching his PhD research on May 1 in a relatively new scientific crowdfunding venture called the #SciFund Challenge.

Researchers from the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources have received a combined $701,000 in state grants to study the black bear population in middle Georgia—of particular concern in light of plans to widen a 15-mile stretch of road through a portion of the animal’s habitat.

The firm donated its Wood Demand Research Program, which tracks and analyzes the consumption of raw materials by companies and manufacturers in the forest industry.
