John Carroll named to Galliformes advisory board

Dr. John Carroll has been named a member of the Co-Chairs’ Advisory Board of the new IUCN-SSC/WPA Galliformes Specialist Group, a voluntary organization that represents threatened Galliformes and their habitats.

Originally formed in 1993 as a Grouse Specialist Group along with four other SGs, all five have now merged to form one unified Galliformes Specialist Group. Its volunteers offers expertise on the Red List procedure, conservation breeding and reintroduction, working with the Species Survival Commission.

Dr. Carroll is a wildlife professor at Warnell. Galliformes are an order of birds that includes turkeys, grouse, chickens, pheasants and quails, also called gamefowl. Nearly 300 are on the “Red List,” a list of species at risk of extinction and is maintained by the IUCN — the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
