Getting Started How to Post Photos and Graphics
Writing and posting articles
You must first
log in
Writing
- Click Write in top left corner
- Click Post, if not already there
- Fill in Title
- In small type under the Title box, you'll see what the URL of this story will be (the part with yellow background) - edit to make it shorter or better if needed by clicking "Edit"

- Write story in box under "Post" *
- Choose category
- Put a lead-in into the story in the Excerpt box - this is what shows up on the home page
- Under "Comments & Pings", uncheck "Allow Comments" and check "Allow Pings"
- Scroll back to top and click Save
- Click "Preview this Post" to see what it will look like
- Close that window and edit if needed
- Hit "Publish" to immediately publish, or "Save" to keep as a draft, or click the Edit link next to "Publish Immediately" to set a date for story to display
* You can also write the story in Microsoft Word, but you must insert it into WordPress by clicking on the "Paste from Word" icon in the second row of icons (see below).
Formatting
- Icons are self-explanatory:
(If you hover over them in the admin panel, you get a box telling you what they do).

- Strikethoughs (3rd from left) are used when you update an article but want to show what the original said by striking through the original text
- Unordered lists (4th from left) indent and put an icon before each line
- Ordered lists (5th from left) indent and put numbers before each line
- Quotation marks (6th from left) will indent a whole section of text - to turn off, click icon again
- Insert link (10th from left) gives you a window to enter a web address. Highlight text you want linked, unlink it by clicking next icon to its right. The Title is what the link text will be.
- Insert image (12th from left) - I prefer to insert using the technique in Photos, Graphics and Movies.
- Click button all the way to the right to get another set of icons:

- "Paragraph" drop down box:
- Paragraph is basic text
- Heading 1 is reserved for section name - same as "WordPress Tutorial" above
- Heading 2 is story title - same as "Writing and Posting articles" above
- Heading 3 is for section heads within articles - same as "Formatting" above
- Have to "Preview Post" to see what they'll look like
- Try your best to not use underlines - people think they're links. Use italics instead.
- Do not use "Align Full" (3rd from left on second row) or "Text Colors" (4th from left) - they will conflict with the rest of the site
- To paste from Word, only use the "Paste from Word" button (6th from left)
- Insert/Embed video (8th from left):
- Locate video you want on the web, noting what type it is and its dimensions
- Upload video to server- make note of path
- Click on Insert Video icon and choose type of media
- Put in URL of where you put video
- Fill in dimensions
- Click "Advanced" tab and uncheck "Auto Play" and "Loop"
- Click "Save"
- Click "View this Post" to see how it works
- For copyright symbols, TradeMark, infinity, etc, use "Special Characters" (9th from left)
- Hit Return/Enter to get a blank line between paragraphs
- To end one line and move to the next (without an extra line between the two), hold Shift down when hit Return/Enter
Upload Files
VERY IMPORTANT! If you need to link to a file that is available through the web site,
do not upload a new copy here.
- Link to the original document on the site for files like:
- Forms for budget or travel requests
- UGA policies and procedures documents
- Leave request forms
- UGA or ARCH Foundation forms
- Forms for student use - Graduate Study Objectives, Program Requirements, Course Sequences, etc
- To link to these type documents, find an existing link on the site for them, place your pointer over the link, right-click (or Control-click on a Mac), and choose "Copy link location" from the menu. (In Internet Explorer, the menu item is called "Copy Shortcut"). Then paste that copied URL, (right-click again and choose Paste), into your link as explained above in "Insert Link".
- To upload a unique document that will only be accessed from this article:
- Click on the star icon in the "Add Media" menu at the top of the Post window

- Click "Choose files to upload"
- Navigate to the file you want
- The Title field is what the link will say
- Save and View this Post to see what it will look like
