Research Interests

Major research themes explored in my lab are related to the effects of environmental pollutants on fish and freshwater mussels as sentinels of ecosystem health. Research is performed at molecular, organismal, population and ecosystem levels of biological organization and includes study of the effects of pollutants on reproduction, development, growth and behavior. Major areas of research include: 1) assessment of the relationship between molecular biomarkers of chemical exposure and adverse effects of the exposure at the organism or population level, 2) endocrine disruption, a process by which stressors influence the reproductive physiology of organisms via perturbation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis, 3) evaluation of contaminant exposure and effects in threatened and endangered species of fish and mussels, and 4) investigating physiological and metabolic effects of thermal stress related to global climate change.
