Students in the UGA game bird lab at the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources have recently published two articles in the official journals of game bird support organizations Pheasants Forever and Quail Unlimited.

Graduate students Brant Faircloth and Kate Spear wrote an article entitled “Land of the Golden Fleece: Searching for Pheasants in the Republic of Georgia,” about Dr. John Carroll’s Spring 2005 field class to the Republic of Georgia, which has been published in the latest edition of Pheasants Forever. A group of seven students, including the article authors, joined Dr. Carroll for almost a month in the Caucus mountain region of southwest Asia on a National Academies of Science and Engineering grant to begin a research assessment of the population and distribution of pheasants in Georgia; the first such effort undertaken since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

The group returned home with amazing stories of their adventures that highlight the recently published article.

On the home front, graduate student Theron Terhune co-authored “Translocating Wild Northern Bobwhite Quail Prior to Breeding Season: Another tool for managing fragmented landscapes,” which has been published in the September/October 2006 edition of the official journal Quail Unlimited. Terhune is an expert on Bobwhite Quail management in the Red Hills region of south Georgia and northern Florida, and has strong knowledge of quail management across the southeast. His article provides a brief natural history of the species, followed by scientifically-based recommendations on the best methods for managing land to encourage Bobwhite Quail inhabitation.

In addition, this edition of Quail Unlimited also provides a feature story reviewing Dr. Carroll’s Game Bird 2006 conference held this past spring at The University of Georgia.
