Warnell graduate students receive bird research grants
The Howe grant, established in 1996, and the Terrell grant, established in 2006, are programs designed to support graduate student research in Ornithology. The Howe grant has awarded more than $42,000 since its inception, and the Terrell grant awarded its first $10,000 this past year.
UGA students who received Howe grants for the year 2006 include Renee E. Carleton, DVM and Ph.D. candidate, for her research project “Disease Ecology of Eastern Bluebirds in Northwest Georgia”; Nico Dauphine, Ph.D. candidate, for her research project “Selective Logging and Bird Conservation in Allepahuayo-Mishana Reserve, Peru”; Soo Hyung Eo, Ph.D. candidate, for his project “Phylogeography and Genetic Population Structure of the Northern Bobwhite: A Conservation and Management Perspective”; and Rua Stob, Ph.D. candidate, for his project “Adaptive Monitoring for Bird Communities in Northwest Ecuador.”
The 2006 recipients of Terrell Grants include Soo Hyung Eo and Rua Stob for their projects listed in the Howe grant section, and Theron M. Terhune and Brant C. Faircloth, both Ph.D. candidates, for their research project “Effects of Translocation on Avian Population Genetics and Demographics within s Fragmented Landscape.”
All six of these graduate students are presently enrolled in the wildlife program at the University’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources.
