Warnell School dean Richard L. Porterfield to retire Dec. 1
The University of Georgia Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Arnett C. Mace, Jr. has announced that effective December 1, 2006, Dr. Robert J. Warren, senior professor of wildlife ecology and management, is named Interim Dean of the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. The Warnell School family congratulates Dr. Warren for this appointment and pledge our willingness to assist him in any way needed during his tenure.
This will be a second retirement for Porterfield, who was retired from Champion International paper company when he became dean in January 2004.
"The Warnell School is one of the country's outstanding forestry and natural resource schools and I've enjoyed my association with the faculty, students and staff," Porterfield said. "We've been able to make some important accomplishments but I've decided it's time to try retirement again."
UGA President Michael F. Adams said Porterfield "set a high standard of achievement for the Warnell School and has been very successful in accomplishing those goals. We appreciate his leadership and service and wish him the best in retirement."
During Porterfield's tenure, the name of the school was changed from School of Forest Resources to School of Forestry and Natural Resources to reflect an expanded range of teaching and research. Private giving to the school has increased and the curriculum has been strengthened.
"The Warnell School provides better educational opportunities for its students and greater service to the forest resources profession and the citizens of Georgia because of Dick's leadership," said Arnett C. Mace Jr., senior vice president for academic affairs and provost. "I will greatly miss his leadership, input and friendship on a regular basis. We thank him, and hope his future holds much happiness and good fortune."
Before coming to UGA, Porterfield held executive positions with Champion International for 21 years. He headed two of the company's major divisions that each had annual sales near or above $1 billion, and he was also responsible for management of the company's five million acres of timberland.
Before joining Champion, Porterfield had been a forestry professor at Mississippi State University and the University of Arkansas. After retiring from the company, he taught at the College of William and Mary before coming to UGA.
