Resources Available for Graduate Education
Building space allocated and available to the WSFR
The WSFR has 109,280 square feet of building space available on campus, consisting of four connected buildings. Off campus space consists of an additional 88,000 square feet of instruction, research, and administration space. The two newest additions to the School’s facilities, constructed in 1992-93, are a 45,000 square foot Forestry School Addition (Building 4), and the 16,000 square foot Phillips Wood Utilization/Plant Sciences Laboratory at Whitehall Forest.
Computing Facilities
The WSFR is networked not only within the School, but also to a broadband that provides access to other University computing facilities (IBM mainframe), the library and the Internet. All School administrative offices, faculty offices, and most of the staff offices are equipped with networked computers. This allows faculty and staff to communicate with students via e-mail. There are three computer labs available for WSFR students, including one for Graduate Student use only. These labs are accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with the use of special magnetic keys that students may check out.
The SIFR Laboratory
The Spatial Information for Forest Resources (SIFR) Laboratory at WSFR is a well-equipped geographic information system (GIS) lab. Students, faculty, and staff participating in class and research projects involving spatial data use this lab. The lab contains 10 SPARC Sun workstations connected to a SPARC server administered by the WSFR GIS manager, 5 NTs, a large-format plotter, 2 digitizers, 2 B/W printers, 2 color printers, and a scanner. Available UNIX and/or NT programs include Imagine, ArcInfo, ArcView, DMS, Idrisi, TNTlite, Fragstats, and the GPS Pathfinder software.
Office Space
Offices are available for graduate students on a basis prioritized by the student’s degree level and whether he or she is on assistantship. Assignment of office space is handled by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Room 1-203.
Library Resources
The University of Georgia Libraries include the Main Library, the Science Library (with branches at the Georgia Center and off-campus experiment stations), and the autonomous Law Library. The total collection is one of the largest academic resources for research and instructional support in the South. As a research library, the library system is rated 32nd in the nation. The libraries are readily accessible and are staffed by competent personnel who can assist in the location of needed materials. Access to on-line computer based information services is available.
The library resources available to the faculty and students of the School are substantial. The Main Library is located on the North Campus of the University, and the Science Library, which houses forestry materials, is one block from the School. The libraries are open nearly 100 hours per week. Of the journal subscriptions, 108 are forest resources-related journals. The card catalog for the entire library system on campus is computerized with terminals for access distributed widely over the campus. There are numerous on-line data retrieval services to assist with computerized literature searches and research, including Forestry Abstracts, Agricola, and Current Contents, plus some others of specific relevance to forest resources.
Motor Vehicles
The WSFR owns a fleet of passenger vans, pickups, station wagons and specialized vehicles. These vehicles are maintained by School staff in the School’s shop at Whitehall Forest and check-out for research or teaching is handled by that staff.
