Is yoassociateur pond safe? Is the water in it clean enough to swim in? Is the pond healthy enough to provide habitat for fish and other aquatic wildlife?.

Landowners and pond managers for urban, farm, industrial and forested land curious about the safety of their ponds and the quality of the water in it are invited to participate in the upcoming Pond Management Field Day being conducted by the University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, the Cooperative Extension program, and the Georgia Forestry Commission. This professional workshop, being held Wednesday, August 16, 2006 from 9:00am to 3:00pm at Flinchum’s Pheonix in the Warnell School’s Whitehall Forest, will focus on different aspects of pond management, such as:

  • Pond Vegetation Management
  • Water Quality
  • Wildlife and Forestry
  • Best Management Practices
  • Construction and Dam Safety
  • Fish and Recreation

“Proper management of a pond, or system of ponds, is critical to maintaining the safety of the pond and the quality of its water,” according to Dr. Mike Mengak, Associate Professor and Wildlife Specialist at the Warnell School. “Ponds are used for many different reasons by many different landowners; therefore, different management methods must be applied according to the primary use of the pond.”

Not only do pond managers need to maintain the quality of the water for themselves, they must also consider the consequences to their neighbors if the water flowing downstream is of poor quality.
