UGA Undergraduate Admission

UGA Undergraduate Admission Explore the website for the UGA Office of Undergraduate Admissions, contains information for all types of interested undergraduate students. The Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources admits students in two categories: pre-professional and professional students. Pre-professional students are students that are taking core courses either at UGA or at other institutions. Professional students are students that have completed the core curriculum and are ready to begin or are currently taking Forest Resources (FORS) courses. Regardless of status, students wishing to enter WSFR must apply to UGA through Undergraduate Admissions. To view the core curriculum, click here.

Pre-professional Program Admission

Admission to the Pre-professional Program is handled through the University of Georgia Admissions Office. To enroll as a pre-professional student, be sure to indicate "Forest Resources" as the school/college in which you plan to enroll.

Professional Program Admission

Admission to the Professional Program is granted by the Faculty of the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources through the Undergraduate Affairs Committee. To be admitted to the Professional Program, a student must be admitted to the University through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and submit a separate WSFR Professional Program application.

Students may apply for Fall semester or Spring semester admission. A maximum of 60 students will be admitted each semester.

Fall semester applications are due by March 1.

Spring semester applications are due by October 1.

Note that these deadlines are earlier than the University of Georgia application deadlines

Eligibility for Admission to the Professional Program

At the time of entry to the Professional Program, students must have completed the pre-professional curriculum. Up to 8 hours of electives or SPCM 1100 (Introduction to Public Speaking) may be deferred if an equal number of credit hours have been earned from the following courses:

  • FORS 3010-3010L, Dendrology, 3 hours
  • FORS 3060-3060L, Soils and Hydrology, 4 hours
  • FORS 3300, Introduction to Fish and Wildlife Management, 2 hours
  • FORS 3580-3580L, Vertebrate Natural History, 5 hours

A student will not be considered for entry in the Professional Program if they are on dismissal from the University.

Admissions Process

Students who meet the above eligibility requirements and have an overall GPA greater than or equal to 3.00 will be admitted immediately into the Professional Program.

Students who meet the above eligibility requirements and have an overall GPA greater than 2.50 and less than 3.00 will be admitted into the Professional Program subject to enrollment limitations.

We gladly work with students who have less than a 2.50. Students should submit a statement explaining their academic performance and efforts to improve.

Students who have not completed the required course work will be deferred until they have met the requirements.

Students who are deferred or denied admission may appeal the decision to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in writing.

Conditions of Admissions

  1. Often students have course work in progress at the time of acceptance to the Professional Program. Transcripts or grade reports verifying completion of these courses must be provided prior to enrollment in the School. Failure to submit these records will result in dismissal from the Professional Program and from courses requiring admission to the Professional Program as a prerequisite.
  2. Students must enroll in FORS 3000, Field Orientation and Measurements, during their first semester in the Professional Program. This course is a prerequisite for most other Professional courses, and because of limitations on equipment and instructor time, only first semester Professional students are guaranteed entry to the class.
  3. Admission is granted for a specific semester. Students who do not enter the Professional Program during the semester for which admission is offered must reapply if they wish to be considered for admission at another time. Admission for one semester does not guarantee admission in a subsequent one.
  4. If a student is dismissed from the University after acceptance to but before beginning the Professional Program, the student's admission to the Professional Program will be rescinded. In such cases, the student must reapply to the Professional Program to be considered for future entering classes.

Admissions Appeals

For information regarding appeals for admission to the University of Georgia, please see the Office of Undergraduate Admissions website. This page only deals with appeals for admission to the WSFR Professional Program.

How do I appeal a denial or deferral to the Professional Program?

An appeal for admission to the Professional Program should be submitted, in writing, by the student petitioning to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. The petitioner should clearly state the nature of the appeal and provide justification for it.

An appeal regarding a denial or deferral of admission to the Professional Program must be received within 30 days from the date on the letter informing applicants of their denial or deferral, if they are to receive the most favorable consideration.

How is a decision made regarding my appeal?

The appeal will be brought before an Appeals Committee. This committee will be composed of three faculty members who serve on the Undergraduate Affairs Committee (UAC). Decisions will be based on a majority vote.

Should I appear before the Committee? Can I bring someone?

Petitioners need not appear before the Appeals Committee. However, petitioners may appear before the Appeals Committee if they so request. In conformance with University Policy, a representative may accompany the petitioner; however, that representative may only support or advise the petitioner and may not be allowed to address the Appeals Committee.

How will I be notified of the Committee's decision?

The decision of the Appeals Committee will be transmitted in writing to the petitioner by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

May I appeal a second time if my appeal is not granted?

If an appeal is denied, the petitioner may once request a reconsideration by the Appeals Committee. The request for reconsideration should be submitted in writing to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Letters requesting reconsideration should be addresses to the Associate Dean and must include information not presented in the original appeal.

Appeals denied by the Appeals Committee may be appealed to the Dean of the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. A denial by the Dean may be appealed to the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Transfer of Credits

Students transferring from another college or university to the University of Georgia must submit official transcipts from those institutions to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Transcripts should be sent directly to Admissions by the issuing institution. You must submit all transcripts!

If a course is taken at another institution after you have been enrolled at UGA, you will need to have an official transcript sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions once your grades are received. It is very important to do this as soon as possible, since it can affect financial aid, prerequisites, grade point average, etc.

If you are not sure how or whether a course transfers to UGA, please contact the Undergraduate Academic Advisor or the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
