Scholarships and Awards
Judith Fitzgerald Brooks Memorial Scholarship
Established in honor of the memory of Judith Fitzgerald Brooks, dedicated employee, alumna, and friend. Recipients shall exhibit the following qualities: GPA of 3.0 or higher, demonstrated leadership, maturity, and character, and provide a written statement on their interest in Sustainable Forest Production. While need may be a consideration, it is a minor factor.
E. L. Cheatum Award
This award honors the memory of the late Dr. E.L. Cheatum, professor of forest resources. Dr. Cheatum was the first director of the University of Georgia's Institute of Natural Resources and coordinator of Coastal Resources Development for the University System of Georgia. He also served as president of The Wildlife Society. In 1976, E. L. Cheatum's vision and leadership helped catalyze efforts by UGA and several state agencies to establish the south end of Sapelo Island as the nation's second national estuarine sanctuary. The E. L. Cheatum Award is presented to a wildlife graduate student in the School of Forest Resources who exemplifies integrity, objectivity, leadership, vision and an appreciation for a broad interdisciplinary approach.
Jerome L. Clutter Memorial Fellowship
This fellowship was established in 1983 by the Clutter Family and the University of Georgia in memory of the late Dr. Jerome L. Clutter. The purpose of this fellowship is to encourage superior students to pursue a graduate program in forest biometrics or timber management. The stipend is $5,000 for the academic year. Applications are available from the office of the Dean, Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, and must be received by March 1.
Arnett C. and Ruth Mace Memorial Scholarship
The purpose of this fund is to provide a scholarship to a third year student with an interest in sustainable forest production. This scholarship may be in addition to a graduate assistantship. The recipient must have a minimum grade point average of 3.3 or higher, be active in professional organizations, and demonstrate leadership potential. Preference will be given to residents of West Virginia.
Martha Love May Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1986 by Professor Emeritus Jack T. May in memory of his wife. The stipend of $1,500 is awarded annually to a female student in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. The student may be undergraduate or graduate and must have displayed outstanding scholarship in her chosen area of study. Applications must be received by March 1 in the Office of the Dean of the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources.
Archie E. Patterson Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund was established in 1987 by T&S Hardwoods, Inc., of Milledgeville, in honor of Professor Emeritus Archie E. Patterson. The award recognizes superior scholarship and is available to juniors, seniors, and graduate students enrolled in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. The stipend is for the amount of one year’s in-state tuition. Applications must be received by March 1 in the Office of the Dean of the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources.
Stoddard-Burleigh-Sutton Award
Established in 1955 with a donation from Elizabeth Ireland Poe for publication of the book, "Georgia Birds," this award recognizes outstanding work, usually in the form of one or more published research papers, in the fields of ornithology and wildlife conservation. One award of $1000 and a plaque may be given each year for each field. The book was written by Thomas Burleigh, a former dean of the School. It was published by the University of Oklahoma, where illustrator, Georgia Miksch Sutton, lived. Herbert L. Stoddard, a noted ornithologist and author of a classic book on bobwhite quail, served as a consultant for the volume. A portion of the royalties from sales of the book support this award in honor of these three men.
Tuition Remission
The Tuition Remission Policy is designed to foster the professional growth and development of the University System’s full-time employees, as well as help its employees increase the effectiveness of their performance in their present positions.
All institutional regulations and procedures are applicable, and the employee must meet all of the University of Georgia’s requirements and deadlines for undergraduate, graduate, or professional admission. To qualify, an employee must be in a regular full-time position which provides employee benefits and must have been in an eligible classification at a University System of Georgia institution for at least six (6) continuous months immediately prior to the start of the academic term.
