Education

Bachelor of Forest Science - University of Melbourne

PhD, Forestry - University of Melbourne

Area of Specialization

My research has focused on using rapid, non-destructive techniques, specifically near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, to measure important wood quality parameters. The techniques I employ have also been applied to bark and leaf samples.

SilviScan

Recently my research has involved integrating data obtained from the instruments with NIR spectroscopy. I am currently investigating the application of these technologies to Pinus taeda (loblolly pine).

Prior Positions

  • Research Scientist / Senior Research Scientist CSIRO Forestry and Forest Products (Australia)

Courses Taught

FORS 3010

Dendrology

The course is divided into a lecture and laboratory components. Lectures are divided into 3 sections: 1. Morphology, anatomy and development of trees, 2. Modern nomenclature and taxonomic systems, and 3. The morphological, geographic, ecological and economic characteristics of important North American forest tree species. The laboratory section teaches students to identify and name the major woody species of the Georgia Piedmont.

FORS 3500

Wood Properties and Utilization

The nature of wood and its properties are described. The course also focuses on the major forest products and the technologies involved in their manufacture.

FORS 4650

Forestry Field Camp

In collaboration with Dr. Dale Greene I teach the forest harvesting and products component of Forestry Field Camp. Over the course of a week we visit several harvesting operations and forest products mills throughout Georgia.

FORS 4570/6570

Practical Wood Identification

The primary objective of this course is to assist students in acquiring the skills required to identify common US hardwoods and softwoods.

FORS 7550

Contemporary Forest Products

The course examines new forest products and changes and developments in manufacturing technologies. The concept of wood quality and its relationships with forest products properties is also examined as are rapid methods for assessing wood properties.

Maymester Study Abroad in Australia

I co-taught a UGA study abroad course in Southeast Queensland, Australia (with Dr. Mike Tarrant and Dr. Bob Matthews) for 3-years. For more information about the program see: http://pacific.uga.edu/
