While the Warnell School’s student body has outgrown the age when aquariums full of fish provided hours of fascination, the School’s fisheries faculty are helping many adults re-live this youthful pleasure. From June 9-11, Dr. Jay Shelton, Associate Professor of Fisheries, along with faculty and staff from UGA’s College of Veterinary Medicine, hosted a Koi breeding and reproduction seminar at the Warnell School, and on site at Flinchum’s in Whitehall Forest.

The Student members of the UGA Forestry Club, based in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, placed third in overall competition at this year’s 49th annual Southeastern Forestry Conclave. The event was hosted this past weekend by Louisiana Tech University and held at nearby Lincoln Parish Park in Ruston, LA.

Bird Conservation in Northern Peru

Deep in the Cordillera de Colán, an isolated mountain range in northern Peru just east of the Andes in the western Amazon Basin, Nico Dauphine, a graduate student from the Cooper Lab at the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, is collaborating with members of a native Amazonian people, the Aguaruna, to promote bird conservation throughout the mountain ecosystem.

Fragmented landscapes are a product of modern land management. This includes impacts on game species. South Georgia is dominated by landscapes that are poor or unsuitable habitat for Northern Bobwhites. When individual landowners undertake management to benefit quail populations often the response is not as positive as we would expect. Many of these places are “islands” of good habitat isolated in landscapes of poor habitat.

Student profile: Jessica Banks: Wildlife student returns from year in Iraq

Jessica Banks, a master’s degree candidate in UGA’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, returned to Athens last April after a year in Iraq. She and her unit, the 1014th Quartermaster Unit of Athens, were among the first wave of soldiers to march into Baghdad in spring 2003. Her journey began in December 1998, when she and a friend went shopping at Georgia Square Mall. “We walked into the mall, and I saw this giant poster of a soldier with an M16 rifle,” she says. “I turned to my friend and said, ‘I have to have that poster for my room.’”
