This is a remarkable accomplishment for team members and one of the most successful conclave competitions ever by a UGA Forestry club team. The team success was based on the achievement of many team members in individual competitions. A complete list of individual award winners can be <a href="../othernews/2008ForestryConclave" target="_self">found here</a>. </p><p><b>Graduate Students Sami Rifai and Marco Galang</b> were recognized with outstanding poster presentations for their forest soils research at this year’s Soil Science Society of Georgia meeting held this past week in Athens. Rifai won first place for his poster: "Impacts of competing vegetation suppression and nutrient fertilization upon soil microbial functional groups in loblolly pine (<i>Pinus taeda)</i> stands." Galang won third place for his poster: "Potential for soil nutrient mobility after prescribed burning in &gt;40-yr-old loblolly pine forest in the Sumter National Forest, South Carolina, USA." Pettis, Jr.</b> as the new Greenhouse manager. Steven has a Master's degree in Plant Protection and Pest Management from UGA, was a Gwinnett Agriculture and Natural Resources County Agent, is the host of the weekly "Athens Home Gardening Radio Show," is a skilled pest diagnostician and fully certified/licensed applicator, and has his own landscape/horticulture consulting business.</p><p><b>Warnell students Patrick Work, Morgen Ingerson, and Ami Flowers</b> have been named to <i>Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges</i>. They will be recognized at this year's Spring Honors and Awards Banquet. </p><p><b>Warnell graduate students Amanda Hamsley, Alison Price and Paul Schueller</b> have been named 2008 UGA Outstanding Teaching Assistants. This award is confined to the top ten percent of TA's at UGA, and it speaks well of both their teaching abilities and their dedication to the School’s academic program. Amanda, Alison and Paul will be recognized at this year's Honors Day and at Warnell's Spring Honors and Awards Banquet.</p><p><b>The Warnell Graduate Student Association</b> would like to thank everyone involved in making the 2008 Symposium a success--all of the graduate student presenters for sharing their exciting research with us; all the student, faculty, and staff volunteers who helped organize and run the symposium, the silent auction, and judge the presentations; all of our silent auction sponsors for their generous donations; and the Warnell school for generously providing research grants.</p><p>Thank you in particular to the WGSA officers; the Symposium and Silent Auction Chair, Emily Brown; the entire Symposium and Silent Auction Committee, composed of graduate student volunteers; Larry Morris; Rosemary Wood; Anuj Sinha; and Dean Clutter.</p><p>The silent auction raised over $1000 this year--Well Done!</p><p>The 2008 Symposium presentation winners are:</p><p>Session I<br />1st place - Lincoln R.       <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><b><br />Events for the upcoming Week:</b> Feb. 29 – Mar. 9<br />(Seminars, Symposiums, Conferences, Events, Field Trips, etc.)</p><p><b>Xi Sigma Pi</b> will hold the 2008 Lumberjack Ball Saturday, March 1 at Flinchums. Festivities begin at 3:30pm and will include food &amp; beverages, an auction, door prizes, pie the professor booth, and the always entertaining fashion show. Tickets are available for $5 at Barbara Trotter’s desk, or $7 at the door.</p><p><b>The Sandy Creek Nature Center</b> will celebrate the life and work of <i>Aldo Leopold</i> Wed., Feb 27 through Sunday, Mar. 2. Sandy Creek Nature Center will hold a presentation on prairie restoration and conduct a prairie burn if the weather permits.  Also, Dr. Walt Cook, former professor at Warnell, will be leading a guided hike on part of Cook's Trail and Oxbow Trail Saturday starting at 2pm. A full listing of scheduled events can be found at the <a href="http://www.handsonnortheastgeorgia.org/" target="_self">Hands-on Northeast Georgia website</a>. </p><p><b>NRRT Society</b> <b>members and Warnell School Ambassadors</b> will coordinate and judge at the east regional of the Georgia Envirothon competition on Tuesday, March 4. Reception begins at 3:30pm and lecture starts at 4:00pm on Tuesday, March 4 in the Ecology Auditorium.</p><p><b>The South Campus Career and Internship Expo</b> will take place Wednesday, March 5 from 11:00am to 4:00pm at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. Employers in agricultural, environmental, and related industries will be on site looking to recruit Warnell and CAES students.For more information email <a href="mailto:esaunders@warnell.uga.edu" target="_self">Emily Saunders</a>.  </p><p><b>The next Warnell Seminar</b> promises an eye-opening look at untraditional, but proven methods for writing instruction. Dr. Michelle Ballif, Director, UGA Writing Intensive Program, will discuss “Understanding and Assisting the Development of Student Writers” Wednesday, March 5 at 4:00pm in room 1-304 (Refreshments at 3:30pm). Strong writing skills are required for academic success as well as post-university work, but teaching these skills is a perennially challenging goal for most academic programs.  UGA's Writing Intensive Program is based on the philosophy that significant attention to writing builds on these general instructional goals by enhancing overall student learning and critical thinking in their chosen disciplines.</p><p><b><b></b><img class="image-left" src="../images/SAFLogo" alt="SAFLogo" height="109" width="89" /> </b></p><p><b>The UGA student chapter of SAF</b> will host the 24th annual SAF Roundtable at 6:00pm on Wednesday, March 5 at Flinchum's Phoenix. BBQ and beverages will be provided. The SAF Roundtable is an informal gathering of professionals who represent forestry and natural resource professions. This event is intended to provide students with the opportunity to meet professionals and familiarize themselves with careers that are available within natural resources. Jacek Siry, Doug Peterson, Joe Nairn, Rhett Jackson, Sarah Covert, and Chris Cieszewski.</b> The University System of Georgia Board of Regents approved the promotion and tenure applications for each of these excellent faculty members.</p><p><b>Mandi McElroy</b>, wildlife graduate student, was awarded the Archie Carr award for her poster at the 28th Sea Turtle Symposium held in Loreto, Baja California Sur, Mexico.  This is a very prestigious award given at an international symposium.  The title of her poster was 'Effect of Nest Relocation on Loggerhead Hatching Success on Sapelo Island, GA, USA.'</p><p><b>Matthew Clement</b>, wildlife graduate student, received the Best Student Presentation Award at the Colloquium on the Conservation of Mammals in the Southeastern United States held in Blacksburg, Virginia.  The title of his presentation was 'Distribution and Habitat Relationships of Rafinesque's Big-eared Bat in the Coastal Plain of Georgia.'  Matt is the 3rd Warnell student to win this award in the last 6 years.  </p><p><br />“<i>Research Findings/Outreach Service/Publications</i>”</p><p><b>The Warnell School</b> hosted the 2008 Southeastern Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (SEPARC) annual meeting February 21-23 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel.  A schedule for the meeting, including list of symposium speakers and topics, workshops, poster titles and field trips is available at the <a href="http://www.separc.org/" target="_self">SEPARC website</a>.  </p><p><b><img class="image-left" src="../images/New%20CFB%20Logo%20-%20UGA%20Red.jpg" alt="New CFB Logo - UGA Red.jpg" height="45" width="193" /></b></p><p><b>The Center for Forest Business</b> continued its successful series of forestland investment conferences with <i>International Forest Investment: An Executive Education Conference</i>. Halter is an award-winning conservation scientist, syndicated science writer, TV nature documentary host, professor of botany at Humboldt State University, California, and popular children's author. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Melbourne, Australia and is an expert on the topics of global warming, hurricanes, fire, weather phenomena, ecological disasters, conservation and forest biology and ecosystems. Topic of discussion and a slideshow will feature fellow member’s trips to SAF national convention in Oregon this past fall. In addition, Nathan McClure from the GA Forestry Commission and the former Oconee Chapter SAF secretary/treasurer will be speaking on the importance of SAF to students and the benefits of being a member. For more information email <a href="mailto:wyssj@warnell.uga.edu" target="_self">Jackson Wyss</a>.  </p><p><b>Bulgaria Study Abroad</b> will have an informal information session on Tuesday, January 29 in the UGA Student Learning Center, Room 275.  The session will begin at 6:00pm and last until 7:00pm.   This will give everyone interested a chance to ask any questions they have, and to learn all about this adventurous program as the application deadline (March 7) approaches.</p><p>If you enjoy exciting adventures, learning about Eastern Europe, seeing awesome scenic beauty,  having history come to life, and giving back through service learning projects, then attend this meeting and learn more about Bulgaria Study Abroad.</p><p>The 6-semester-credit-hour courses will be offered during the 2008 first summer short session (June 6-29, 2008).  The new Art History course will be fully implemented in 2009.  These courses are open to all majors and meet several requirements of students' study plans.</p><p><b>The next Ecology Seminar</b> will be Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 4:00pm in the Odum School Auditorium. The new course on Bulgarian Art History will be introduced with information and discussion about the course: <i>Natural and Cultural Resources Based Tourism in Bulgaria</i>.</p><p>These 6-semester-credit-hour courses will be offered during the first 2008 summer short session (6-29 June 2008).  The new Art History course will be fully implemented in 2009.  These courses are open to all majors and meet several requirements of students' study plans.</p><p><strong>New Student Lunch</strong> will be Tuesday, January 22 from 11:30am to 1:00pm in the Warnell School courtyard. Cars will be located on the other end for the return to the Allen house, so it will be a 4.2 mile one-way hike. Bring gloves and some water.</p><p><b>The Society for Conservation Biology</b> holds its next meeting Monday, January 14 at 6:15pm in room 1-304 of the Warnell School. Dr. Ron Carroll, distinguished professor from the Odum School of Ecology, will be speaking about "Global warming: risks and opportunities for conservation". Attendance is mandatory for all new professional students.</p><p><b>The Bulgaria Study Abroad &amp; Service Learning Program</b> will have an informal information session Tuesday, January 15<sup>th</sup> at 6:00pm in room 4-132 of the Warnell School. Information will be provided on Eastern Europe, Bulgaria, activities with the class and logistics to prepare for this summer program (6-29 June 2008).</p><p>If you can not make it to this session, there will be a seminar and reception at the Lamar Dodd School of Art on Friday, January 18th beginning at 5:30pm.  </p><p><b>The next Ecology Seminar</b> will be Tuesday, January 15 at 4:00pm in the Ecology Auditorium. The GA Envirothon, socials and fundraisers will be part of the discussion.</p><p><b>Warnell</b><b> School</b><b> Thursday seminars this semester</b> begins with a series of three talks, starting this past  Thursday, on the general theme of the complex nature of ecological relationships and other high-dimension issues in natural resources management, and different ways of dealing with them. The first speaker was Dr. Craig Miller, assistant professor in the Warnell School, who spoke on "Applications of Hierarchical Models in Human Dimensions of Natural Resources."  The next seminar in the series will feature Dr. Jim Peterson on Thursday, January 17, at 4:00pm in room 1-304, with refreshments at 3:30pm.</p><p>The final series speaker on complexity will be Dr. Rhett Jackson (1/24).  Please join us for what will be an interesting and informative series.</p><p><b>Ecology Graduate Student Symposium</b> will be held Friday , January 18 &amp; Saturday, January 19 in the Ecology Auditorium. Congratulations, Nico!</p><p><b>MFR forestry graduate student Jackson Wyss</b> received a $2,500 scholarship created by ImageTree Inc., to honor the August 15th appointment of Michael Clutter as the new dean on the Warnell School. Jackson is the UGA student chapter Society of American Foresters secretary and a first year graduate student under the direction of Dean Michael Clutter. </p><p><b>Ryan Sharp</b>, a PhD student in the NRRT program working with Dr. Craig Miller, was recently awarded a scholarship to attend a civic engagement workshop over spring break at Acadia National Park in Maine.  The scholarship was presented to Ryan from the George Wright Society, an organization committed to preserving Americas natural and cultural treasures.  Ryan will be working with 5 other PhD students from around the county on a project to get the local communities in the Acadia area more involved with the day to day operation of the park.</p><p><b>Dr. John Carroll</b>, professor of wildlife management and ecology and leader of Warnell’s study abroad program in South Africa, has been asked to serve on the Board of Directors for UGA’s African Study Institute.</p><p><br />“<i>Research Findings/Outreach Service/Publications</i>”</p><p><b>Bob Izlar</b> has had two authored and seven co-authored articles published in the <i>Environment</i> volume of the <em>Encyclopedia of Southern Culture</em> published in November, 2007 by the University of North Carolina Press.</p><p><b>Prof. Karl Miller</b> will be co-hosting Quality Whitetails TV, a weekly program aired on the Outdoor Channel that will provide information on deer biology, deer management, and deer behavior. Eighteen bags of can goods with gifts were delivered to the grandmother and her five grandchildren.  Angie Callaway, working with her church, was able to coordinate this delivery.  The family was overwhelmed with your kindness. Additional donations at the holiday party went to another local area family in need during the holiday season. Finally, 82 pairs of shoes were donated to the Soles4Souls charity. This catered event will feature traditional tailgate fare and a variety beverages. </p><p>Dean Clutter has graciously agreed to pay for each faculty/staff member to attend the tailgate with a guest. Additional guests are $15 per person. Children FREE.</p><p><b>A PLT/WILD workshop</b> will be held Sunday, Nov. 11 from 8:30am to 4:00 pm at Flinchum’s for anyone interested in enhancing their environmental education credentials. The cost is $40, which includes lunch, a PLT guide, People and Places Guide, WILD curriculum and Aquatic Wild curriculum. Alfriend</i> </b>(BSF ’69) a consulting forester operating his own company in Thomson, Ga. since 1983. After graduation he served three years in the U.S. Army, retiring as a Captain. He then worked for Continental Can as an area and district forester until 1978 when he became a consulting forester. Alfriend is a member of ACF, SAF, GFA, FLA, is a registered forester, licensed real estate broker and appraiser in Georgia and South Carolina. </p><p><b><i>2007 Distinguished Young Alumnus Award was presented to Brian Stone</i></b> (BSFR ’99; MFR ’01) Director of Appraisal Services for Forest Resource Consultants, Inc. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Georgia Chapter of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, chairman of the Georgia Forestry Association’s Young Professionals Group, and as a member of the Warnell Young Alumni Advisory Committee where he is chairman of this year’s Alumni Golf Tournament Committee.  </p><p><b></b></p><p></p><p><strong><img class="image-left" src="../images/Newman.jpg" alt="Newman.jpg" height="235" width="248" /><br />Graduate student Amanda Newman</strong> placed third in the Forest Science and Technology Board Student Poster Contest at the recent Society of American Foresters (SAF) National Convention in Portland, Oregon. Her poster was entitled "Shortleaf Pine-Bluestem Grass Community Restoration in the Southern Appalachians". Her abstract will be printed in the January <em>Journal of Forestry</em>.</p><p><br />“<i>Research Findings/Outreach Service/Publications</i>”</p><p><b>Warnell Grad Student James Martin</b> organized the Tall Timbers Research Station and Land Conservancy and the Society for Range Management Bobwhite Project Field Day on October 26. The <a href="https://hdclel.cfr.msstate.edu/nbci/PalmerFieldDay.htm" target="_self">“Bobwhite and Rangeland Management”</a> field day featured an educational field tour held on a private ranch in Kenansville, FL. Kenansville houses the primary study site used in research evaluating bobwhite and grassland songbird response to various management practices on rangelands and quail hunting plantations in south Florida, which is partially funded by the USDA-NRCS/MSU Bobwhite Restoration Project.</p><p><b>Drs.
