“This Week at the Warnell School”/Warnell Week is a weekly information release providing significant news and events from the University of Georgia’s Daniel B. Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. Friday, November 2

Golf Tournament

UGA Golf Course 8:30 Shotgun Start

We will be back at the newly reconstructed UGA Golf Course. The renovations have increased the green fee to $60 which covers prizes, greens fees, cart, tax and refreshments. Players will be grouped into foursomes so please let us know who you would like to play with. If you don’t have a foursome, we will match you up with someone.

We must have names of foursomes and registration fee by Wednesday, October 24th!

Golf Tournament Lunch - following tournament

Five Points box lunch ($10). Prizes awarded.

This year the Young Alumni Committee will raise sponsorships and any proceeds from this effort will go toward the Young Alumni Endowment for Leadership and Training. For more information about sponsorships email Brian Stone.

Dedication of "Archie’s Chapel"

The "horseshoe" room in Building One will officially be dedicated in honor of Archie Patterson’s many contributions to Warnell. We invite all alumni and friends to join family, friends, faculty, staff and students to the event.

Whitehall Mansion Open House

Visit the School’s historic gothic Victorian home at the entrance to Whitehall Forest. 5:00 pm

Alumni Dinner

Flinchum’s Phoenix: 6:00 pm cocktails, 7:00 pm dinner

Join fellow alumni, friends, faculty and staff for a buffet dinner and alumni awards program. Presentation will feature Distinguished Alumnus and Distinguished Young Alumnus Awards, Warnell Staff Awards. Pending visits from special guests including UGA’s Dancing Dawgs, Hairy Dawg, and Spike.

The UGA Fisheries Society will hold their next meeting Tuesday, Nov. 6 from 5:00 – 7:00pm. Location and discussion topic TBD.

The next meting of the UGA chapter of The Wildlife Society will be held Wednesday, Nov. 7 from 6:45 – 8:00pm in 1-304. Discussion topic TBD.

A PLT/WILD workshop will be held Sunday, Nov. 11 from 8:30am to 4:00 pm at Flinchum’s for anyone interested in enhancing their environmental education credentials. The cost is $40, which includes lunch, a PLT guide, People and Places Guide, WILD curriculum and Aquatic Wild curriculum. For more information, contact workshop coordinator Heather Fleming.

The Georgia Forestry Association is holding its fall workshop, “Forest Certification: Navigating the Landscape and Discovering the Opportunities of This Evolving Forestry Marketing Tool,"  Thursday, November 15, 2007 at the Association headquarters in Forsyth, GA.This workshop will offer 5 continuing education credits for attendees.

Awards/Appointments

American Association for the Advancement of Science names four UGA researchers AAAS Fellows
(Dr. Sarah Covert, associate professor forest biotechnology, recognized)
UGA News Release

Dr. J. Michael Meyers was recently selected by the board of The Roger Tory Peterson Institute(RTPI) of Natural History, Jamestown, New York, to be an Institute Research Associate. The purpose of the RTPI Associate program is to broaden its scholarly base by recruiting scholars and graduate students as associate members of the Institute. The mission of RTPI is expanding in the areas of natural history education and art, and recognizes that teachers have opportunities to help young people develop a relationship with nature.  Dr. Meyers is currently planning research on breeding birds related to global climate change and citizen science with others associates of the Institute. Research Findings/Outreach Service/Publications

Dr. Jeff Dean, professor of forest biotechnology, was an invited speaker to present a plenary lecture to the Forest Genomics session at REDBIO 2007 (The Triennial Meeting on Latin American and Caribbean Agricultural Biotechnology) being held at Vina del Mar in Valparaiso, Chile. His presentation was titled "The conifer genome sequence: A snapshot and a prospectus." Additional information can be found on the conference website.

The Warnell School Student Ambassadors hosted their quarterly clean-up effort of Whitehall Road (from Jot em Down to the Whitehall Mansion)on Saturday, October 20. They wish to thank all faculty, staff and students who took time out of their Saturday morning to assist in this public service program.

 

 

The Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources at The University of Georgia provides UGA students with five degree path programs in forestry and natural resource science and management, include the forestry, fisheries and aquaculture, natural resources recreation and tourism, water and soil resources, and wildlife management and ecology majors. With more than fifty faculty and 23,000 acres of teaching lands, the Warnell School is the southeast’s oldest, and one of the most respected forestry and natural resource education providers in the United States. The school also houses one of the largest study abroad programs in the nation covering all seven continents to provide global learning opportunities for its students.
