“This Week at the Warnell School”/Warnell Week is a weekly information release providing significant news and events from the University of Georgia’s Daniel B. Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. Events for the upcoming Week:

The Georgia Chapter of the Society for Conservation Biology is holding its inaugural meeting at 6:15pm on Monday, October 22 in room 1-304 of the Warnell School. Take advantage of this opportunity to be a part of a new chapter in Conservation. Email the Georgia Society for Conservation Biology for more information.

The next Conservation Seminar will be held Wednesday, October 24 in the Ecology Seminar Room at the Odum School. Featured speaker will be Whit Gibbons, Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, speaking about "How Do We Deal with Hidden Biodiversity?: The Herp Dilemma." Program to begin at 1:25pm.

James Martin, PhD student in wildlife, will be hosting a Bobwhite Covey Call workshop at Three Lakes WMA in Kenansville, Fl on Wednesday, October 24. The workshop, sponsored by the Tall Timbers Research Station and Land Conservancy, will feature Martin instructing attendees on the principles of covey call surveys, and an early morning Bobwhite Covey Count demonstration. Fall Break – Thurs. & Fri., Oct. 25 & 26

James Martin and Adam Butler, graduate students in Dr. John Carroll’s Game Bird Lab, are coordinating a ‘Bobwhite and Rangeland Management Field Day’ on Friday, October 26 at the Escape Ranch in Kenansville, Fl., sponsored by Tall Timbers Research Station and the Society for Range Management.  They will also be presenting their research at this event. Additional Homecoming Event Opportunity - A small crowd is gathering for an informal sporting clays shoot at 9:30am on the Friday (Nov. 2) of Warnell Homecoming Weekend. If you are interested in participating please contact: Tom Harris, Bob Izlar or Tommy Tye. Sporting  clays is the main plan but 5-Stand, skeet or trap can be accommodated.

The UGA Fisheries Society will hold their next meeting Tuesday, Nov. 6 from 5:00 – 7:00pm. Location and discussion topic TBD.

The next meting of the UGA chapter of The Wildlife Society will be held Wednesday, Nov. 7 from 6:45 – 8:00pm in 1-304. Discussion topic TBD.

The Georgia Forestry Association is holding its fall workshop, “Forest Certification: Navigating the Landscape and Discovering the Opportunities of This Evolving Forestry Marketing Tool,"  Thursday, November 15, 2007 at the Association headquarters in Forsyth, GA.This workshop will offer 5 continuing education credits for attendees.

Register today by emailing GFA to reserve one of the limited openings for this workshop. Additional information can be obtained by calling the Association office at 478-992-8110.

Golf Tournament

UGA Golf Course 8:30 Shotgun Start

We will be back at the newly reconstructed UGA Golf Course. The renovations have increased the green fee to $60 which covers prizes, greens fees, cart, tax and refreshments. Players will be grouped into foursomes so please let us know who you would like to play with. If you don’t have a foursome, we will match you up with someone.

We must have names of foursomes and registration fee by Wednesday, October 24th!

This year the Young Alumni Committee will raise sponsorships and any proceeds from this effort will go toward the Young Alumni Endowment for Leadership and Training. For more information about sponsorships email Brian Stone.

Dedication of "Archie’s Chapel"

The "horseshoe" room in Building One will officially be dedicated in honor of Archie Patterson’s many contributions to Warnell. We invite all alumni and friends to join family, friends, faculty, staff and students to the event.

Visit the School’s historic gothic Victorian home at the entrance to Whitehall Forest. 5:00 pm

Alumni Dinner

Flinchum’s Phoenix: 6:00 pm cocktails, 7:00 pm dinner

Join fellow alumni, friends, faculty and staff for a buffet dinner and alumni awards program. Presentation will feature Distinguished Alumnus and Distinguished Young Alumnus Awards, Warnell Staff Awards. Pending visits from special guests including UGA’s Dancing Dawgs, Hairy Dawg, and Spike.

Research Findings/Outreach Service/Publications

As the Athens-Clarke County area dries under drought, the local water authority has developed a Water Conservation Video featuring Warnell School hydrologist Rhett Jackson and his children. The public service announcement is running on the Athens Clarke County info channel (Channel 7). ACC is also buying time on local TV stations and posting it on the ACC website.

 

The Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources at The University of Georgia provides UGA students with five degree path programs in forestry and natural resource science and management, include the forestry, fisheries and aquaculture, natural resources recreation and tourism, water and soil resources, and wildlife management and ecology majors.
