“This Week at the Warnell School”/Warnell Blog is a weekly information release providing significant news and events from the University of Georgia’s Daniel B. Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. Events for the upcoming Week:
Sept. 21-30
(Seminars, Symposiums, Conferences, Events, Field Trips, etc.)

The Warnell School and Odum School will host a joint seminar featuring Peter Arcese, University of British Columbia, discussing "Consequences of parasite invasion and land use management on the metapopulation dynamics of a passerine host" on Friday, Sept. 21. Reception begins at 12:00 p.m. and program at 12:20 p.m. in the Ecology Auditorium.

The State Botanical Gardens of Georgia presents ‘Insectival’ on Saturday, September 22 in the Gardens Visitor Center and Callaway Building. This year’s theme is “Six-Legged Immigrants.” Admission is $3/person ($10 max/family). For more information visit the Botanical Gardens website.

The first Warnell Graduate Student Association meeting will be held next Monday, September 24 at 6:00 pm at Las Conchitas, next to Agua Linda on Prince Ave. Food and beverages will be provided. They'll be discussing possible fundraising activities for WGSA this fall, participating in the ‘Getting Into Grad School’ presentation for the undergrads, and beginning to solicit silent auction donations. The UGA Student Chapter of  AWRA (American Water Resources Association) will hold its first meeting of the year Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 6:00 pm at the Warnell School (Building 4, first floor conference room). Discussion will include becoming certified in aquatic programs such as Adopt-a-Stream, Project WET, Project WILD; participating in the community through aquatic outreach projects; traveling to regional and national meetings; and networking with other professionals, faculty and students involved in aquatic research, management, and conservation. The next Ecology Seminar will be Tuesday, September 25 with Todd Katzner, National Aviary, speaking about "Conservation ecology at arm's length: non-invasive demography of rare and endangered species" in the Ecology auditorium. Reception begins at 3:30pm and seminar starts at 4:00pm.

The Wildlife Society student chapter will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, September 26 from 6:45-8:00pm in room 1-304. Speaker TBD.

The next Conservation Seminar will be held Wednesday, September 26 and feature Warnell School Professor Robert Cooper speaking about "Migratory birds as catalysts for large-scale conservation." This seminar will be held in the Ecology seminar room beginning at 1:25 p.m.

Warnell School student ambassadors will host a party for pre-professional students at Flinchums on Thursday, September 27 from 6:00-8:00pm. Fun games and pizza will highlight the evening entertainment.

GFC will host “The State of Our Forest Resources in Georgia” on Thursday, September 27, 2007 at the Georgia Southern University Nessmith-Lane Continuing Education Building. For more information visit the event website.

Xi Sigma Pi
student chapter invites all Warnell School family members to its first annual Low Country Boil at Flinchum's on Friday, September 28.  Show up around 5:30 pm for the customary Warnell socializing and food will be served at 6:30 pm. 

A big plate of boiled Georgia shrimp and crabs, sausage, corn, potatoes, onions and of course desserts will be served for only $10.  Members request tickets be purchased from Mrs. Barbara Trotter's desk in the front lobby no later than Monday, Sept. 24 for the sake of knowing how much seafood to be picked-up in Darien. You are welcome to attend even if you have not bought a ticket in advance, but how much extra food will be available is unknown.

Warnell Alumni, Faculty, Staff, Students and Friends invite you to join them for the Ole Miss game Tailgate Party on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at 10:00 am in the Mary Kahrs Warnell Memorial garden just outside the School’s front door. Cost is $15 per adult, Children FREE. This catered event will feature traditional tailgate fare/ brunch items including Jerry's famous cheese grits and a variety beverages. The Ole Miss game is scheduled for a 1:00pm kick-off.

UGA Study Abroad is hosting the 23rd Annual UGA Study, Work and Travel Abroad Fair on Wednesday, October 3 & Thursday, October 4 from 10:00a.m. – 3:00p.m. at Georgia Hall, Tate Student Center. Do you desire to travel to parts unknown?  Would you like to have unique experiences and see new places while earning credit towards your degree?  Have you ever considered working or volunteering abroad?  Would you like to increase your skills in a foreign language? If so, then make sure you attend this fair.

The UGA chapter of the Herpetological Society will be joining the Auburn Univ. Herp Society for a fall BioBlitz the weekend of October 5-7 somewhere in Alabama (specific location TBD). A BioBlitz is a friendly competition to find as many species (herpetological in this case) of a given group as possible over a specific area and time span. Extra points are usually awarded for county records, range extensions, etc. If you are interested in participating, or want more information, email UGHS program coordinator Kerry Nelson.

Savannah SAF will hold it 6th Annual “Walk in the Warnell Forest Field Day” on Friday, October 19, 2007 from 8:00 am–2:00 pm, at the Mary Kahrs Warnell Forest Education Center in Effingham County, GA.  The purpose of the Walk is to educate Savannah area 4th grade students, teachers and parents about forestry as a profession, the need for and benefits of sustainable forest management and the natural patterns and processes of forest ecosystems. 

James Martin and Adam Butler, graduate student in Dr. John Carroll’s Game Bird Lab, are coordinating a ‘Bobwhite and Rangeland Management Field Day’ on Friday, October 26 at the Escape Ranch in Kenansville, Fl., sponsored by Tall Timbers Research Station and the Society for Range Management.  They will also be presenting their research at this event. Public Hearings Set on Revised State Water Plan

A series of public hearings will take place October 15-19 to receive public comments on the revised draft Comprehensive Statewide Water Management Plan.

The revised draft should be posted to the Water Council's web site by October 1, if not earlier. Each of the meetings will get underway at 6 p.m. Members of the forestry and natural resources community are encouraged to review the draft and participate in as many of the hearings as possible. Lengthy comments should be put in written form for the official record.

Dr. Robert Bringolf, new assistant professor in fisheries and aquaculture, specializes in the toxicology of fish and freshwater mussels.  As a researcher at NC State he helped develop standardized protocols allowing mussel (bi-valve) toxicity data to be incorporated into water quality criteria derivation. He has three articles published in a recent special edition (Vol 26) of the Journal Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry concerning toxicity of pesticides to mussels.  The special edition was recently highlighted by Yahoo News and ScienceDaily.com.

Research Findings/Outreach Service/Publications

Dr. Gary Grossman, distinguished research Professor in fish ecology and population dynamics, was the featured presenter at last week’s UGA River Basin Center Second Friday Seminar. Grossman spoke about "Habitat and Population Regulation in Southern Stream Fishes."

Robbie and Jennifer Fuzy Edalgo (both BFSR ’02) are pleased to announce the birth of their first baby, a boy named Fisher Jeremiah Edalgo born on Aug 22, 2007. It is our understanding that both mother and child are doing very well!
