“This Week at the Warnell School”/Warnell Week is a weekly information release providing significant news and events from the University of Georgia’s Daniel B. Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. TWSLogo 

The 5th Annual Chili Cook-off, sponsored by The Wildlife Society, will be held Friday, January 25th at Flinchum's Phoenix. Tickets are $7 at the door. Festivities begin at 5:00pm.

SAFLogo

The first on campus SAF student chapter meeting of 2008 will be Tuesday, January 28 at 6:30pm in room 1-304. Topic of discussion and a slideshow will feature fellow member’s trips to SAF national convention in Oregon this past fall. In addition, Nathan McClure from the GA Forestry Commission and the former Oconee Chapter SAF secretary/treasurer will be speaking on the importance of SAF to students and the benefits of being a member. Bulgaria Study Abroad will have an informal information session on Tuesday, January 29 in the UGA Student Learning Center, Room 275.  The session will begin at 6:00pm and last until 7:00pm.   This will give everyone interested a chance to ask any questions they have, and to learn all about this adventurous program as the application deadline (March 7) approaches.

If you enjoy exciting adventures, learning about Eastern Europe, seeing awesome scenic beauty,  having history come to life, and giving back through service learning projects, then attend this meeting and learn more about Bulgaria Study Abroad.

The 6-semester-credit-hour courses will be offered during the 2008 first summer short session (June 6-29, 2008).  The new Art History course will be fully implemented in 2009.  These courses are open to all majors and meet several requirements of students' study plans.

The next Ecology Seminar will be Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 4:00pm in the Odum School Auditorium. Featured speaker will be J. Vaun McArthur, Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, discussing "Smoking Guns and Heavy Metal Bullets: The effect of industrial contamination on microbial antibiotic resistance." Reception begins at 3:30pm.

The Warnell Student Ambassadors are invited to the Annual GFA Legislative lunch at the Capitol on Wednesday, January 30 (all day event). Ambassadors will first tour the capitol building and then assist GFA members in hosting the lunch for Georgia's representatives and legislative professionals. Email Emily Saunders for more information.

The next TWS chapter meeting will be Wednesday, January 30 at 6:45-8:00pm in room 1-304. Discussion topic TBD.

FOCUS THE NATION: UGA participates in the nation's largest teach-in on global climate change solutions Wed., Jan. 30 and Thurs., Jan. 30. For more information visit the Athens Focus on the Nation website



Mark Your Calendar

The Warnell School will host the 2008 Southeastern Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (SEPARC) annual meeting February 21-23 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel.  A schedule for the meeting, including list of symposium speakers and topics, workshops, poster titles and field trips is available at the SEPARC website.

The Center for Forest Business continues its successful series of forestland investment conferences with International Forest Investment: An Executive Education Conference. The conference will be held at the Bayerischer Hof Hotel in Munich, Germany on February 22, 2008. For more information visit the conference website.

Congratulations (& Thank You)

Col. Bob Izlar (U.S. Army, Ret.), director of the Center for Forest Business, was awarded the Legion of Merit Medal this past week. This is the highest award a non-combatant officer can receive.  With this he joins a very elite group of officers that have received all medals one can receive.

 

The Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources at The University of Georgia provides UGA students with five degree path programs in forestry and natural resource science and management, include the forestry, fisheries and aquaculture, natural resources recreation and tourism, water and soil resources, and wildlife management and ecology majors. With more than fifty faculty and 23,000 acres of teaching lands, the Warnell School is the southeast’s oldest, and one of the most respected forestry and natural resource education providers in the United States.
